I didn't start watching the show when it started because I don't care a bit about zombie movies and such but my son got me to watch a bit and I got hooked. Several people we know have been extras in the show as we live about 45 miles from where it is filmed. I have friends that are zombies!
There are some weapons that are pretty obvious ( I recognize the crossbow)but a few I can't quite figure.
This is a work of fiction and is therefore not required to be accurate in any way. How many rounds does and AK-47 with a "banana clip" actually hold? Last night Rick took one from another guy that had been shooting it on full auto and then fired about 100 rounds or so before tossing the gun. Maybe he had a couple of extra mags stored in his pants but, since he had been tied up and about to be hit in the head with a bat, I sort of doubt it.
14 people all firing full auto rifles and magnum handguns inside a metal building and they all come out being able to have a quiet discussion.
Where did they find all the full auto AK 47s?

Good show. Interesting premise. Lots of differing weapons.

*last night's ep. spoiler*

they really need to bring .22lr into the show. it would work great from a safe spot. like when the zombies where in the basement. they could have just head shot them from up there then go in. a couple people in the group should be carrying 22s and a thousand rounds. but i guess they don't need it since they have aks like you mentioned.

They use so many different kinds of guns in the episodes that it's hard to keep track of them. Thankfully, there are several websites out there that are keeping track of them for you - some people have way to much time on their hands. Here's a good one: Guns of the Walking Dead

Like Bullseye Bob, I have always wondered why they never use 22's. I guess they're not as dramatic and entertaining as popping a zombie with an AK. Last nights episode has a particularly lame segment where Glenn went into a cleaned out gun shop but was somehow able to find three suppressors.

Last night Rick told the guy there was a .44 magnum buried. These sites say it is a .357.

Since most of what they use is scrounged from residences I would think they would be loaded with 10-22s, Ar-15s, shotguns and hunting rifles (considering that the show takes place in GA) rather than a bunch of "exotic" full auto weapons. I guess a 10-22 with a 10 round rotary mag is way too boring for Hollywood.

I've seen AK-47s (Rick had one last night) AR-15s, an M-1 Carbine (finding ammo for it must be a lot of fun) and various shotguns.
I agree that .22LR would be a good caliber for what they (usually) need. But keep in mind that they must have an ability for quick reloads. I think my Winchester 9422, while quit adequate for wasting Walkers, would be so good once I needed to reload while watching several remaining walkers close in on me!
A Ruger 1022 OTOH with plenty of sparer mags would be fine. Like an M-1 Carbine with easier to find ammo (assuming when the zombieapocolypse happens the .22 drought has gone away).
Various handguns have been shown but I really don't recall what they were, if I knew when I was watching the show....

Class II dealers? Collectors? There might be a few around. If it was an AR style I'd say from a National Guard Depot or U.S. Army.
One character found some silencers in a gunstore last night .... not impossible but certainly unusual.

Just brace yourselves... in the comic book, when they start "reloading", it takes a warehouse full of heavy equipment to crank out a couple cases of cartridges.

I was like... uhh... "my Dillon 650 can do that in an evening and it takes up a few square feet..."

Sometimes good artists and writers don't do their homework. :)

i always wondered if i could get a job in hollywood as a firearms adviser. they need some!

o yea, just remembered hershel's unlimited ammo zero recoil 12 ga. from season 2.

anyone tried syfy's budget zombie series z nation. it gets pretty good by ep. 4 or 5.

He actually said it contained a .45 not .44. He conveniently left out his Colt Python revolver which is a .357.

It was actually last week. Rick said the bag contained "Guns....Ak-47, 44 magnum, automatic weapons, night scope....."

.357Magnum is more boring than 44 Magnum in Hollywood.

I was surprised at the lack of AR15s. I've seen only the first couple of seasons, so maybe they've added some. The only people that had AR15s/M16s to start with were the soldiers that were overpowered in the hospital.

I know little about Canada's gun laws, but I believe it's shot in Canada even though it is set in the U.S., so maybe that is why they didn't have as many.

"...How many rounds does an AK-47..." Doesn't matter on TV. The mags never run dry. Counted 15 shots out of John Wayne's(might have been Roy's) SAA, long ago. snicker.
"...Canada's gun laws..." Movies and TV companies have a special licence that let's 'em do and use pretty much whatever they want. Prop guns aren't capable of firing live ammo anyway. Otherwise, it'd be a budget thing.
Was told, by a movie type, that movie gun sounds are all enhanced as real shots don't sound real enough. Shop I worked in provided firearms to movies and TV.

Some of the sites that follow Walking Dead seriously noted that when Rick was questioned (at least twice I can recall) about the buried bag'o'guns he deliberately lied about what was there. Why would he he want to tell them the truth?

No .22 firearms? Maybe the current drought of .22 ammo is being reflected in the script? Realistically, probably there are no semi- or full-auto blank firing .22 prop guns. On the other hand, I have always, always kept a brick or two of .22 in reserve (500 to 1000 rounds) since the threats to ban or tax ammo in the 1960s, so I would expect .22 guns and ammo to be around,

I question the value of a full auto in the Zombie apocalypse anyway: it takes a brain shot/stab/club to deanimate a Walking Dead zombie and full auto is a waste of ammo. Since most AKs I see are semi-auto civilian clones, I would not see any point in converting them in the face of a zombie plague.

There are two local Class III dealers in Title II firearms that stock silencers within twenty miles locally, so silencers could be left behind by looters in gun shops. I do recall at one time they were using improvised silencers (the Walking Dead are attracted to loud noises, and will mob a shooter).

They have used 22rf in the show. I remember Carl (the teenage boy) using a silenced 22 pistol as well as a silenced 9mm. While they have not spoken of ammo replenishment either reloading (at all) or even finding ammo, I am not surprised. The writers have shown a remarkable tendency to ignore several highly practical matters re: weapons, food, vehicle choices, etc.

All in all, while I have been disappointed in several aspects of the show's logistics, they have done better than your average TV show.

The term "Suspension of Disbelief" is operative in almost every fiction genre. More so in Science Fiction than any other, I would guess. It is necessary for most folks in order to enjoy most fiction. Of course (me among them), there are those who get part of their fiction enjoyment from finding as many violations of physics, logic, round count, etc. It's all part of the fun.

I have spent a lot (relatively speaking) of thought reconciling "walker" (our group of survivors calls them "Walking Dead" or "Walkers" because world, there was no such word, "Zombie") physiology with reality. Like, how quickly a newly dead corpse decays a great deal i a few minutes but then slows that decay to almost nothing or how there are no flies hanging around the walkers and while everyone takes precautions not to get bitten, they have no concern over staph or fungus, wading into the water to take out some walkers in last night's show. And only a few times have they used the simplest of armor (like a forearm shield would be REALLY handy at times).

So, I have to infer that the "walker disease" causes the skull to develop osteoporosis very quickly, but leaving the other bones undiminished.

A fan, since the premier, Lost Sheep

Deputy Rick holster....

If you have a big(N frame) DA revolver & want a holster like "Deputy Rick", check out SoCal shop; Tex Shoemaker. They created the design & license the same rig for Colts/S&W/Dan Wesson/Ruger.
See: www.TexShoemaker.com .

It is filmed in Georgia.

For some reason I was thinking it was Canadian. That makes the lack of AR15s even more strange.

(Or maybe I thought it was Canadian because of the lack of AR15s.)

My wife and I like to joke that the show should have been titled "How to Not Survive the Zombie Apocalypse." Because of how disinterested they seem in surviving. More of a soap opera with zombies. The only time I saw where they consciously considered running out of ammo, was in last season (?) where they visited the booby trapped house that had ammo stockpiles. They grabbed some there.

Yeah there was the episode early on where they passed by a failed National Guard Barricade so they could have procured some NFA items from there. The thing that gets me about some of the AR's in Walking Dead is that some of them don't have rear or even front sights. Other movies do it too and it drives me crazy. Makes me think they need to talk to the prop guy about his expertise on the subject of guns.

Man... now you are going to make me have to go watch it again!
