Colt Commander 9mm
Sig P210
Walther P88
2 Broomhandle Mausers (1 in 7.62 & 1 in 9mm)
Sauer 38H
Walther PP Super
Colt 1903 &1908
Remington M51
FN/Browning M1903 in 9mm Br Long

Must haves assuming you can afford more than one pistol:
-A full size service pistol
-A carry gun in 9mm or bigger
-A .22 plinker

My personal thoughts are that each person should decide what guns fit their needs, their shooting ability, and their budget.
There is no one right solution.

Careful including the Makarov...you'll end up with more than one...then, since you're buying the ammo at under $9 per box in case quantities, you'll have to get a CZ-82...then you'll start looking at the PA-63's ("just for kicks" as one other poster said)...

It's a sickness!

I lack a high capacity 9x19 and I would second that as a "must have.

I concurr that a good .32 acp is also a must. An Ortgies pistol could substitute for a 1903 if you like the classics as I do. However, I could understand if one opts for a mouse gun instead.

The weapons I list, are mostly just examples of categories of semi-auto pistol that could be considered in a collection. The 1911, obviously speaks for itself.

There are also, many different ways to categorize semi auto pistols.

One method, is by size.

Pocket pistol (Ruger LCP)
Subcompact (Glock 26)
Compact (Sig P225)
Full size (Beretta 92)
Large/Longslide (Longslide 1911. Mk23 and Desert Eagle would fit in this one too.)
Unconventional (Kel-Tec PLR-16, Ruger Charger)

Another method is by caliber.

.22lr (Browning Buckmark)
5.7mm (FN Five Seven)
.32 (Kel-Tec P32)
.380 (Ruger LCP)
9mm Mak (Makarov)
9x19mm (Beretta 92)
.357 Sig (HK P2000)
.38 Super (1911 'racegun')
.40 S&W (Springfield XD40)
.45 GAP (Glock 37)
.45 ACP (1911)
10mm (Fusion 1911)
Desert Eagle for the typical magnum calibers (all I can really think of)
AR or AK pistol for short rifle calibers.

By trigger

Single action (1911)
Double action (Beretta 92)
Double action only (S&W M&P)

By general category

1911 (in a category of its own)
Wondernines (Beretta 92)
Polymer framed, striker fired (Springfield XD)
Unconventional (Kel-Tec PLR-16)

By how you intended to use them (won't bother listing examples, since this is where things get really subjective)

Lets see...:
A hardchrome two tone combat tuned
5" Series 70 1911
A park. SA 5" 1911 Mil Spec truck gun
A Colt .22 Conversion on a Caspian frame
Springer GI with Brazil-Imbell
stamped on it
A Kimber II
A Browning Highpower
A 4" SA Champion
Dad's WWII usmc 1911A1

And then maybe a SA 1911 Mil Spec
to round it out

There aren't really any must-haves - just depends on the focus of your collection. The closest thing to a must-have would be some form of 1911.

Semi- auto:

1911 - Mine are Kimber Raptor II's and Ed Brown Kobra Carry

Glock - either a 17 or a 19 to start the collection ;)

Ruger Mark III .22

Mousegun - Mine is a KT P3AT

This would be my basic beginner's semi-auto battery. Of course other calibers and manufacturers would be added over time :D

Two other must haves would be wheelguns though... a S&W J-Frame and 686 :neener:

HiPoint-Just to be ornery
Raven-For the elegant simplicity
1911-for the ego
Polymer carry >9mm
CZ52- for the fireshow at dusk
any 22- for plinking
With good shopping skills all the above for less than $1200

Must haves: hi quality 1911 in 45 acp, one of the traditionally id'd wundernines (92fs, P226 or Glock 17), and a good 22lr -- maybe a Ruger or a Browning ;)

Also one of the DA "wondernines" like a Beretta 92, Sig P226, S&W 59... One of the modern plastic police guns in .40 S&W or 9mm (preferably a Glock) would be nice too.

Hmmm...wouldn't a compact or fullsize Glock "count" as a "Wondernine" too? :D

+1 to the 1911, if only for history's sake...it's 2nd next on my "to buy" list. The FIRST on there is a revolver (which I currently have none)!

And a BIG practical +1 to a VERY VERY concealable gun...I prefer the Kel-Tec P3AT myself. No matter how "tacti-cool" you think you are, there WILL be some days where something that small and unobtrusive will be all you can be bothered to carry (or will be able to)...

ETA: I see the PPK listed quite a bit. If you like the design but are on a tighter budget, I and several others have had great luck with the Bersa Thunder .380 (a clone of the PPK).

1911 fer shur! I have one stock A from 1913 and one "race gun"
9mm also. I have an Astra A-80 and S&W 469. Both are nice but I wish I had gotten more mags for the A-80 back when!
9mm Makarov! Stone reliable and great to hold with a "Mak-a-wrap" grip!
.380 Buddy has a CZ83 that is mighty nice!
.22 Ruger or Browning. Mine is Ruger 22/45 target SS and shoots WAY better than I do!

I wish to own CZ75, but my next purchase will be S&W 617!

I don't remember who originally made this quip, but a line from an old show comes to mind...

"This isn't an antique store, it's just a bunch of stuff!"

On one level, part of me doesn't see much of a difference. On another level, do you want a collection or a "bunch of stuff?"

That is, are you approaching this as a collector or a shooter? (These aren't mutually exclusive, so please bear with me.) There are a lot of classic pistol designs, and I suppose I could come up with a Top 10 as well as the next person.

Having ten or so totally unrelated pistols (different chamberings, different magazines, etc.) isn't real practical from a shooter's standpoint, and it probably isn't a "collection" in the usual sense of the word. There's nothing wrong with that. A Top 10 is a theme, after all.

I own the pistols I own because I like them. I've wasted a lot of time, money, and effort finding this out for myself. I own some 1911s at the moment, but I wouldn't own any if I didn't like them. The sad truth is that it took me some years to really warm up to the 1911, and I missed out on some real deals about ten years ago.

The only handgun I would really like to own for its own sake would be a Mark II Hi-Power. I really loved Hi-Powers and owned a FEG P9M-SA, but I discovered the CZ 75 shortly before purchasing a "real" one. Short story: I prefer the CZ.

Personally, the only thing keeping me from "collecting" guns* is my budget.

* Collecting as in the sense of "I'm going to buy one specimen of every pistol ever chambered in 9x18mm," for example.

1911 Colt- classic .45
Glock 19- for the kool aid addicts (mine is now a safe queen after a KB)
FNP-9- The best shooter I own
Ruger MkII or Buckmark- for training and just down right fun
S&W Mod10- fills the revo gap
CZ 75- for high quality build, not as reliable as my FNP-9
BHP- classic 9mm
NAA mini- for when it's all you can carry and still observe Rule #1
Sig-the only one I have yet to get but I want for the slim build to fit my hand
