Well, I promised to give myself six months of shooting my S&W 617 for Steel Challenge and did pretty well with it. Now it's back to my Ruger Mark IV 22/45 for RFPI.
It's been years since I've shot with iron sights. I feel more comfortable with a dot but in the scheme of things it's time to retrospect origins. This Mark IV has a few upgrades which should make it a joy to shoot.
I started out by installing the Volquartsen Accurizing Kit and VQ Bolt. The kit improved the trigger pull from 6 pounds that felt like I was pulling through the safety every time to a crisp 1 pound 7 ounces that breaks like a glass rod.
Pre and Overtravel are at a minimum and I've fired a few hundred rounds to make sure everything is working correctly. Adding the bolt was a no brainer. With new firing pin and extractor this gun just runs perfectly and is easy to clean by just taking a paper towel to the internals. I also use MPro-7.
I put a Carolina Crusher Compensator to help speed up splits. Many think that the compensator is not needed on a .22 but looking at my times, that few hundredths of a second between shots adds up to a lot over 200 rounds. The CC doesn't require much effort to clean. I'll bet I've shot over 4000 rounds without having to take a chisel to it or use The Dip.
From Tandemkross I picked up a Cornerstone Safety and a Striplin Thumb Rest. Both help my keep my hands the same for every stage. I did have to use my Dremel to get the gun to go into the Tandemkross holster.
Grips are from StonerCNC.Com and are very comfortable. The checkering is perfect for a good purchase on the frame. I also like the variety of colors available.
I was all set to go to the local indoor range for some practice today but I swear, for the first time in 40 years I talked myself out of going. I just wasn't in the mood and thougth I'd just be waisting ammo. Even though I'm only using CCI Blazers, they don't cost a lot, I don't want to just fling lead downrange without learning something.
So, everything is in my shooting bag waiting for next week.
