I refinshed my SKS's stock not long ago, I also recontured and reshaped it bit, plus installed a correct 10 round fixed mag (have wanted to for a long time, hey, it pays to have a Father who works at a recycling center.....free stock, mag, and cleaning kit, all still covered in cosmoline :D ) So I figured why not see what my favorite gun related message board thinks of my humble rifle? Im rather proud of it :)

SO here is my picture of my SKS (and it's pal who just happens to be in this picture) :

looks nice, but where's the bayonet?

If I ever get all the cosmo out of my Yugo I'm going to put a few coats of tung oil finish on it.

Actually, Im not quite sure. I OWN one for it, and its a chinese one, and the orginal stock (which I have kept) even has the slot for it, it simply didnt come with one on, or with it. however, the one I salvaged doesnt have the slot.

I was under the impression that it was illegal for the Chinese ones to be imported with bayonets. Anyone care to correct me?

Chinese SKS were allowed at one time to have bayonets but then sometime before the assault weapon ban they were required to be removed before importing. I have sold thousands with and without. Sorry I cannot give you a sure date when the bayonets were removed.

I am thinking of giving mine a new finish as well. I like how yours turned out there.

What did you use? I have some amber shellac left over from another project that I'm considering using.

I used some stuff thats been lying around for years, I tested it on a piced of scrap wood first though, the stain was something called "delta cream coat, Aqua Stain- 224 Mahogany" thats listed as "water based acrryic wood stain"
The outer coating was something called "varathane Elite Diamond outdoor finish" and it is a clear semi gloss, "water borne" clear coat, I used about 6 coats of it to finish it.

Im not sure if any of this is still made, or where to get it as its just what happend to be lying around, and the clear coat is DEFINETLY old, I just looked for a good combonation of wood stain and finish from what I had around :)

Id gather any like "water borne" outdoor clear coat would be about the same, id just test it first on some scrap wood with your selected stain. And im sure your shellac would work well :) lol, just have to test, right?

I bought one of the Romanian AK's the other day, then I decided to get something else as I sometimes do. Since I'm on the sell one to buy one program with my wife, the AK had to go... The rifle had blond furniture on it and nobody wanted the thing... So I went home and sanded the clear coat off, then I stained it with a Cherry Satin stain. Next day it was gone, the first guy I showed it to wanted it, it's funny cuz a few day before he didn't want anything to do with it. I didn't tell him it was the same gun!

Your rifle looks really great, it's cool what a little love will bring out in a rifle...

A labor of love that was, My father bought it a LOOONNNGGGG time ago (for me anyway) and it came with a clunky duck bill mag, and a horribly dented stock...when the fellow threw that stuff away, I was happier then you could belive! :) Im just happy it looks good, I Worked hard to make it look as fine as I thought it should, after this I may very well do this with other guns...hey, "beater" guns I see never seem to fail to make me think "I Wonder..." :D now only if i could BUY them :D
