S&W 6906 with Gold Dots, because of all the guns I've owned over the years, this happens to be the only one I own right now. Luckily, it's a fine weapon!
i have a few options when it comes to home defense:
1. mossberg 500, 7 rounds in the tube, loaded with 00 buckshot. i leave the chamber empty so that if need be i can fend off a would be burglar with just the sound of me pumping a round into the chamber.
2. AR 15 with magnification dialed in @ 100yds. you never know when you might have to make some longer shots. can shoot from the hip if need be.
3. AK 47= big round, reliable, i am amazingly accurate with it from the hip.
4. Sig P220 SAO with a Streamlight TLR-1 light and siglite night sights. this is my nightstand gun. has NEVER malfunctioned 1 time. accurate, absorbs recoil well especially with the tlr-1 on it. i can identify targets in the night with it while blinding the crap out of said target. loaded with corbon 230gr +p 45acp.
I keep all of these loaded and within reach. my home is child free so i dont have to worry about that. anyone who comes to my house is a friend and knows to respect the space.
if i had only seconds to address a threat i would probably go for the p220.
Taurus M66 3" .357 magnum.....because it's a revolver. Honestly, I feel much better about neglecting a revolver in a drawer for months, though in winter it does get carried some. In 2003, I kept my M85 snub there and I have no qualms, really with that, either. I just have the 66 in the drawer right now.
Third: A highly trained, mobile, agile, hostile attack mini schnauzer! (The first two choices are more humane for the intruder, so I saved this as my last resort.)
Still just an M&P40 with two California Gestapo-approved 10-round magazines. I chose it because it's reliable and I can shoot it well. Aside from the M&P, I have a Prussian-style bayonet (NOT mounted on the pistol ), a baseball bat (could try mounting the bayonet on this...), an 18 lb assault kitty, and the only truly dangerous weapon in the house: me.
By the way, my all-female (except for me), non-anti-gun yet non-pro-gun family wouldn't let me get a shotgun for a first home-defense firearm because none of them felt they could handle it after trying, and they didn't want any revolvers either because they seemed antiquated (whatever ). So I got the M&P, which we all trained with at the range quite successfully, and then I found out while doing functional training at home that nobody else can rack the slide to save her own life (perhaps literally someday). Sigh...that's right, at the range the gun was always either locked open or in battery. I just couldn't imagine that it could be so hard for them to do it--for me it's less strenuous than tying shoelaces. That's it, I'm getting a shotgun for myself and revolvers for the rest of the family as soon as I can convince them that we need more weaponry (just give me time--I usually end up getting what I want somehow without upsetting everybody else unduly ).
Sig P228 because it has been 100% reliable and I shoot it well due to my extensive time shooting the gun. Muscle memory makes this my #1 choice for home defense.
Although I have to point out it is secondary to my 870 Police shotgun.
Currently a 590A1 with #4 Buckshot, my glock 27 on my side of the bed. The pistol may alternate with my GP100 or P13 and P14. On my wife die of the bed a S&W 642. I keep all my HD guns loaded with safeties on.This is augmented by a 90 lb Australian Sheppard mix.
Beretta 96D Elite 1A with Crimson Trace laser grips loaded with LEO Speer Gold Dots
Why? Because it is amazingly reliable and I am amazingly comfortable with it. Got another one just like it upstairs, and them some tiny little Jetfires strategically hidden throughout the rest of the house.
either an XD 45c, Sig P220 Elite Dark 45 cal, or XDM 40. 45's loaded with Speer Gold Dot JHP 200 grain +P, 40 cal is Federal Hydra Shock JHP. I also keep my Kahr PM9 in my pocket at all times and my Benelli M2 Tactical 12 gauge close by.
Glock 17- simple to use (good if I have to fight after suddenly being awakened), high cap (aiming while a little groggy is not easy) and in 9mm (easy recoil so my wife can use it effectively, not ear splitingly loud or blinding when fired inside, also the G17 mags can be put into my G19 or G26 to back it up.
