What can I bring to New York State ?

Done a search here, limited info. Looked for NY state general laws but the official NY website is obtuse with little info on actual laws. NY state police website only has registration & licensing info.

I know enough not to bring a handgun. Then there's the "Safe Act" so no AR or anything over 7 rounds. That leaves my bolt action (Howa 1500) or my Benelli Super Nova (pistol grip). I know either one needs to be cased, unloaded & ammo separate.

Does the pistol grip on the shotgun make it an "assault weapon"? I'd rather have that than the bolt gun. any ammo restrictions on 00buck / slugs ?

Intent is casual plinking on private land & self defense.

Apparently even my pepper spray is unlawful in NY (3/4 oz limit).

IMIO ("in my ignorant opinion") you would be better served in bringing no firearm into a hostile state if you are only visiting. At the same time, knives are a bit problematic, but that might only be NYC due to their definition of "gravity knife". When I recently had to be in NYC I carried a cane and a Case Sodbuster Jr. that I knew couldn't be flicked open and would also have a short blade.
 
I have to echo the "visiting or moving here?" question. I'm no legal expert but you're talking NY state and NOT NY City, aren't you? Because there's a BIG difference and NY city is so different it might as well be a separate state, (or even country) and I wish it were. As far as NY state goes that 7 rounds in a handgun stuff got overturned a few years ago. 10 rounds is the limit now but you couldn't bring your handgun here anyway unless you were a resident and got yourself a pistol permit. I'm not sure about the pistol grip on the shotgun ( don't think so) but there's no problem with 00 Buck or slugs. I don't know about pepper spray but I recall seeing it around. I would google around and see what else you could uncover besides just that confusing NY website which is a pain.

Interesting discussion. I agree NY (and MA) and guns don't mix. What about disassembling a pistol. Then it is not a pistol. But some part of it might be considered a pistol. Meplat, I don't know if you're camping or not. I have a healthy fear/phobia about bears. There is no way that I'd camp/hike in a bear prone area and ~if~ I did, I would be armed:)

If you ta I ever it apart it's still a pistol. A half assed prosecutor can get you indicted for possession.
Disassembled could be a factor in getting a plea to a lesser offense but will not get you off.
 
To the OP, I assume the Supernova is a pump-action? If so, it is legal in NY as long as it holds no more than ten rounds in the magazine tube.
 
A pistol grip on a shotgun is allowed. You cannot have more than seven rounds in the tube. I have a 20 inch semi shotgun with a pistol grip. The howa bolt gun is just fine. It can have a pistol grip or threaded muzzle since it doesn't meet the ignorant definition of an evil rifle. The seven round for semi's was thrown out. The judge said 7 was bad and 10 was good. Whatever than means. You need a bastardized AR with no muzzle device and one of those fugly looking stocks. A mag over 10 will put in the slammer for a while. No pistols without a permit.
 
No way I'm taking a handgun into NY, my AR either. Griz22 is right even disassembled its still a pistol and one year in the graybar hotel. I'm not camping but the Catskill bears are mostly scardey bears and wont bother you if you keep a clean camp. I've camped in Grizzly country and survived.

I'd rather have the Supernova with me as it's be a bit more versatile than the rifle for defense.I do have an extended tube (8 shot) but its under the limit so it'll be good. I checked fish & game and 00buck & slugs are ok at any time unless it's deer season, them a hunting permit is required. Which oddly is the opposite of where I am - no buck or slugs loaded or even in your pockets / truck unless it is deer season.
 
Why New York? Go to Vermont or New Hampshire or Maine! Hey Pennsylvania is right there! Great place!

Take your dollars somewhere else if you can. Don't fund states that don't respect their own citizens, and that don't respect your right to defend yourself.

The fact you said you plan on shooting on private land makes me think you're going to visit some friends or relatives, which kind of throws just going somewhere else out the window, but if you have any kind of choice in this at all just go somewhere else that's more gun friendly.
 
You could bring common sense. There is a great dearth of it in much of the state, so it is valuable, albeit not valued in Albany or the City.

Pepper spray is legal in NY, but it is one of the few states where you must buy the spray from a store in NY. Websites will not even ship pepper spray to a NY address. Therefore, any spray you buy there will meet the state law requirements for size and strength.
 
New York state has some serious /strict gun laws. What ever you come up with better be correct.

You are fine in New York with both of those firearms. Neither one is a semi-auto, so neither one is an "assault weapon." Neither one holds over 10 rounds, so neither one has a "high-capacity ammunition feeding device." I would caution you to only load seven in the tube of the shotgun, though. Even though the seven-round limit was tossed by a federal judge, you never know when you'll run into a cop who isn't aware of that. The weird thing is that prior to that ruling you'd be legal with seven in the tube and one in the chamber, but you wouldn't be legal with eight in the tube and an empty chamber. Isn't it great when gun laws are written by people who know little or nothing about guns?
 
I just got back from a Trip to NY (Buffalo). I try as mentioned above to not go to unfriendly states, but they have a neat naval museum there..... SO, I checked and re-checked my car for anything firearm related that we might not normally think about.... There weren't any mags or ammo from range trips, etc. I made sure to take out the spare ccw mag in the change holder, etc.... THEN, I made sure to go the speed limit!

However, I spent no money other than at the naval museum in NY. I fueled up and ate outside of the state, even waiting to eat so I could make that happen!

Hats off and a Big Thank you to the Veterans! Navy guys, that stuff is impressive and tight quarters! I cant imagine being out to sea with 1,000 + of your closest friends on a pitching and rolling ship.....then somebody starts shooting at you!!!!

Not according to any federal or state law I've ever heard of.

Take a Glock 19 apart, put it in your carry-on bag and try to board an airliner and see what happens.

  3. A belief in the fairytale that the police have a legal duty to protect you as an individual.
I wouldn't bring a gun to New York. It's just not worth it.

You might want to do some reading on the people who've been prosecuted after LAWFULLY flying into NYC with guns when they got temporarily stranded due to circumstances completely beyond their control.

If you're a lawful gun owner they ARE out to get you, and that should inform any decision you make to go there with guns... or at all.

To the best of my knowledge, you are GTG with both of those, as long as you stay outside of NYC.

The best place to ask is the local resistance. Try the NYSRPA, or Long Island Firearms forums.

Sorry I don't agree with your statements at all. I could very well say don't go to Ohio or any other state. You can be a victim with or without a firearm or in or outside New York. Violent crime is almost non existent where I live. We all know that Guns and New York City don't mix. Same as with all the big cities. But New York is mostly rural and conservative north of New York City. The poster just wanted to know what would be lawful for him to take. He's not taking pistols or semi auto modern sporting arms. He is good to go.

I find your comment more in line with sellers on gunbroker who won't sell me a bolt action rifle or some other legal item because I am from New York. To me your aiding and abetting the government by keeping me from a rifle. Also missing on a lot. They are not out to get you or me. Just too ignorant willingly or otherwise to make good law.
