I have a Remington Super Full that I use for turkey, and also Trap. But I don't shoot steel shot for turkey, even though I have a bunch of it leftover from duck hunting.

Test on a pattern board or turkey target. No two Identical guns, chokes , set ups will very often shoot the same, each gun is an individual as far as patterns. What one may shoot well, another identical set-up may not. You may get a perfect pattern out of one shotshell load and a spotty one out of another brand. Test whatever shell you are going to hunt with, and buy from the same lot once you find a good load.

True. I currently use a SA-459 20 gauge for turkey. I bought a Trulock Federal # 7 choke for it and a SumToy choke designed for Federal Heavyweight #7 Turkey shells, since that’s my favorite Turkey shell. I also had the turkey choke that came with the shotgun. Didn’t care for the Weatherby choke pattern, I was satisfied with the Trulock and the SumToy was outstanding.

Depends on the gun - "Full" or "Extra Full" (basically I'll use an Extra Full if I've got it, but won't loose sleep if using a regular Full).

I'll echo cdb1's comments on the Steel Shot though. Unless you're legally mandated that's a bad idea. Use Turkey Loads (whatever brand you like). They're pretty cheap and hit a LOT harder than steel shot.

MY gun (mossberg 930) likes XX full choke, and Remington nitro turkey #4 3". As does my Remington 870 turkey model with X full Remchoke. I am interested in trying Winchester longbeard #5's to see if they perform better. The short answer is, you will only know if you test your gun with several different loads.

..... That pretty much says it all....... My Mossberg 500A will also pattern very well with a few different turkey loads as long as I leave the extra-full choke tube in it. I have several different boxes of 12 ga., 3" turkey loads that all work well and it's a dedicated turkey gun so now I never change chokes anymore. The extra full choke tube stays in there except for a semi-annual removal to ensure that the threads haven't seized up and then it just gets re-lubed and re-installed.

My Mossberg Model 9200 Turkey Model patterns very nicely with the Extra Full choke that came with it.

My old Remington 11-87 likes the xtra full Remchoke with Ferderal Heavyweight #5’s. As stated earlier each shotgun will perform differently using various loads and chokes. I will say that one thing that helped me tremendously was putting a 1x4x20 scope on it.

I like Federal Heavyweight and sometimes wish I’d opted for a scope. I have a Burris Fastfire III on my turkey gun though that works very well.

Hey,

I have a Patternmaster Extended Range choke that I use for waterfowl. Would it work for smaller sized shot lead #4 or 5 shot? I've heard they work better with #2 and larger shot, but was wondering what people's experiences have been.

Poly choke. Screwed down to a bit tighter than full but not much. The beauty of this is that I can buy a pile of cheap shells on clearance after season ends, and adjust the choke shot for shot until i hit a sweet spot then dial it in for the best/most consistent pattern.

Bet you guys with the fancy schmantsy screw in doomaflotchies can't do that. :neener:

I have a 12 and a 20 with polychoke. I will buy a 16 if I can find one with a polychoke. I really like the flexibility. I will admit that I bought a truglo titan once on clearance and used the snot out of it. Sold the gun and the buyer paid extra just to get it because he thought it was the next big thing in shotguns...even though they were common years ago and kinda flopped.

My Mossberg sports a Pure Gold 670 turkey choke. 3.5" hevi-shot mag blends will, on paper, throw a killing pattern to 60 yards. My last turkey was killed at 22 yards.

Ah, the old "Dialaduck" polychoke! I have one on an old Model 12, 20ga. Was gonna try filling one of my tags with it this year!

My main gun is an old 500 w/20" barrel Extra Full flush fit Carson's tube. Use Rem Nitro 3" #5 or #6. Hunt woods at ranges from 10 to about 30 yards

I use Winchester Supreme XX Magnum Turkey loads. 3”, 2oz of #4, through a factory Full winchoke in my 12ga model 120 ranger. I could probably find a tighter choke, but the factory full does the job.

TC encore turkey shotgun with a 2.5 leupold scope and a standard TC turkey choke at 35 yards with Winchester longbeard 1-3/4 OZ #5 shot. target is 10.5" square, about 300 #5,s are in a shell and I get 230- 233 #5,s on the square. disreguard the two .357 holes.
