What chokes do you use for Skeet Trap or Sporting Clays?

For skeet use cylinder to improved cylinder.

For trap use modified to full

For sporting clays use anything from improved cylinder to improved modified depending on the presentation.

Keep it simple if your're a newbie --

For skeet - use the least choke you've got (skeet or cylinder).

For trap - use the most choke you're got (full or Mod)

For SC - just stick the IC tube in and forget about it.

Yes im still kinda new but realy just wondering what other guys use.
Anyone can use any choke they want and I want to see what they use

For trap I believe that a beginner will be better off with a modified choke rather than full.

Try a modified at first. You may not dust any birds but you'll break more overall.

My 2 cents based on my experience with beginners shooting from the 17 yard line.

In SC, I use cylinder for short shots (less than 20 yards or so), IC for most shots (20-40yds) and Mod for the really long shots.

A buddy of mine uses IC for everything and he usually outshoots me by a few birds. So much for the benefits of choke changing...

Modified for trap and SC.

Hopefully I'll get around to picking up a Skeet Choke fairly soon. I keep spending all my money on ammo instead....

Skeet or Cylinder for skeet (depending on the gun I'm using), #9 shot all 4 gauges 12ga, 20ga , 28ga, .410bore
skeet choke for sporting clays, #8 1/2 in 28 gauge, #8 in 20ga and 12ga
Modified for trap singles @ 16 yd line #8 shot
full for 2nd bird in doubles trap #8 shot
Improved modified for handicap 22 yds #8 or full at 27 yd line trap #7 1/2

Skeet: Skeet, IC

Trap: Modified, IM, Full. For a Progressive, I use an O/U with F/M and switch to the Full barrel for the farthest shots.

SC: IC/M is a good start, M/F or M/IM or LM/IM can work, too. Depends on the distances you'll be shooting. Some incoming targets favor tight/open rather than open/tight. That's what the barrel selector is for.:)

If you only have one barrel, use Skeet for skeet, Modified for everything else unless you know all the shots will be really close or really far. If in doubt, use Modified. At least that's MY mantra.:)

With really good-quality hard shot in handloads, I've accidentally shot 27 yard trap with IC and it worked fine.

I use a 30" Full Choke for trap. My team would handicap in the 19-21 yd range. I found I shot better with the full than the modified.....usually in the lower to upper 40 range out of 50 targets.

Our team was named OSIMA.......Oh Shoot I Missed Again

And the difference between skeet/trap and sporting/5 stand/FITASC guys...

For skeet I shoot cylinder and skeet chokes, for trap I shoot full or light full (depends on the gun, 28" vs 32" barrels), and for sporting clays / 5 stand / FITASC, I have in my choke box 1 cylinder, 2 skeet, 2 improved, 1 light modified, 2 modified, 1 improved modified, 1 light full, and 1 full.

Also, check out this very nice chart from Briley. I keep a laminated copy in my shooting bag to explain choke selection to whatever new shooter I'm introducing that day:

Personally, to answer the question as posed, I use full for trap and skeet and I don't shoot SC.

My preferred game is trap and so I use the ideal choke for it.

For Skeet, I use 1 oz. loads in my 12 gauge. Seein' as how people shoot skeet with 20's, 28's, and .410's, with proportionally reduced loads, I figure even with the full choke I'm throwing out more than enough lead in a big enough pattern that I should be able to hit the thing if I'm shooting right.

So far, I'm not so much with the hitting things in skeet, but I think that's me, not my choke. I prefer trap anyway.

Trap = 12 gauge Full choke, 16 Grains of red dot ,7/8ths Oz 7 1/2 shot from 16 to 27 yard lines.

Skeet = 410 , Skeet Choke, 14 grains of 2400, 1/2 Oz 71/2 shot.

5 Stand or SC, 12 gauge, IC same load as trap, 410, Modified same load as Skeet.

Personally, I'm currently using IM/IM (in an O/U) for all of my sporting clays. The only exception is on close (like 20 yards and in) rabbit targets. Then, I'll screw in a cylinder. For me, it's just less to think about, and I'd rather always have enough choke.

Now, that's what I've settled on after a lot of experimentation and understanding about my own shooting. For a long time, I shot LM for almost everything, increasing choke (to IM) for long shots and decreasing choke (to CYL) for close shots. For sporting clays, I still think that's best for most people, although if you don't have a LM choke, an IC is a close second.

For trap, I use Full, although from the 16 yard line, anything from MOD on up works well.

For skeet, I use Full, but that's because I only shoot it for fun and practice. If I were shooting for score, I'd be using CYL or SKEET.

BTW, with that chart above... you'd almost think that Briley sells choke tubes or something. ;)
