I have a Bushmaster varminter, it has a competition trigger, free floating, heavy barrel in .223 Remington all as it came from Bushmaster. It is equiped with a Nikon varible scope. What kind of competition shooting could I use it in?

You can use it for 3 gun and it'll be OK though a little on the heavy side. If you decide you like 3 gun you can have the barrel shortened, turned down, and threaded for a comp for about $125.

You could use it in F-Class. (A subset of high power competition.) If you put non-optical sights* on it (which wouldn't be cheap) then you could use it as a match rifle in NRA high power.

* the front sight clamps on the end of the barrel, no need to change your front sight base. The rear can be anything from a carry handle-type one to kilo-buck anshutz sights.

What kind of competition are you looking for? Tactical/Sniper style? I bet you could use it there. Action of some sort? It's probably on the big/heavy side and the scope's probably not ideal, but I doubt you'd be prohibited from playing along. Traditional "target" stuff? There are lots of different flavors of NRA high power (i.e., centerfire with a few extra details--yours would fit) that would let you use your scope, or not. At my local range, they've got an informal "service rifle" match--basically it ends up being a "run-what-you-brung" match. If you're new, I'm sure you shoot with a scope. Anyway... there are lots of things you could use it for, what *kind* of competition are you looking for?

Oh, and I've got a bushmaster Varminter... sounds like the same one. In case you're interested, mine likes 24.0 grains of IMR4895 under a 69gr Sierra Match King with Win brass and primers (loaded to magazine length).
