I have a strong desire for a .38 or .357 wheel gun. But my budget is pretty shallow right now and while I would be happy with a used gun bought from someone it would also be cool to have a gun with some PD providence. What wheel gun departmental trades are out there right now? I have seen a few Model 64's floating around on Gunbroker. I might add, I really more of an automatic guy, so I do not have a lot of experience with wheel guns other than Model 10's and 686's. I recently read some Cirillo stuff, and I guess it has me wanting a retro piece.

Did any US law enforcement ever use Taurus or Ruger?
Don't get me wrong- I love my Taurus M66 and my .357 SP101

Taurus revolvers have seen a LOT of carry/use, as the service revolver of many a South American cop. The Model 82 was their 'Model 10', complete with lanyard ring! I have a Model 82, bought brand new, that, first shot at the range, was a '10-x'! The Taurus 82's found on gunsAmerica are a lot of trader-ins, with more carry wear than use, but can be found at 'budget pleasing' prices. The trade-ins might just have the wood grips, which seem to me to fill the hand better than the newer Taurus Hogue-copy grips.

Somewhere, in the galactic bitbucket called ther Internet, there was a long posting of the history of the Taurus model 82.

FWIW, i own Browning HP's (yeah, i'm the MARPAT HP owner), SW Model 15's - one of which was a PD sale -, and a Taurus 82. I grab a revolver more often. I carried a model 15, a motorola radio, and an m16, on the back 40 of an airbase in thailand, for 3 years. Gimme the revolver, anytime.

YES

I just found some S&W model 10's and model 15's for sale at a FLORIDA chain called SHOOT STRAIGHT.
They were asking either $275 or $350 depending on location.

Oh, the old I&NS used RUGER Security Sixes and later the BORDER PATROL carried GP-100's.

Police surplus revolvers are long gone. Most departments switched to semiautos in the late 80s or early 90s. Any surplus revolvers being sold today are from private security guard companies.

Ruger Security Six with six inch barrels were a long time issue of the Florida Fresh Water Fish and Game Department.

Some Florida police departments and Sheriff's Offices authorized the use of four inch Ruger Security Six revolvers as an old pre required training days police auxilleryman my fathers revolver was an early model ( I like those grips better than later) four inch. It was the first .357 Mag I ever shot.

I have often wondered what became of the squajillian S&W Model 10 bull barrels Wells Fargo removed from service with their Pony Express Courier Service in 1977 ( the month I went to work for them) but then again J&G sales offered used Model 10 Bull barrels for a couple of decades.......

When I was a kid most smaller departments in Florida had individual officers purchase their own revolvers, which meant there was little or nothing to surplus. In my little town that meant you could find everything from S&W Victory models to Colt Diamondbacks in the .38 Special days.

I still think of the S&W Model 15 as about the perfect police revolver.....and a Model 19 if you just have to have a .357.

There were some Brinks Stainless .38 trade ins about a year ago.
Yeppers, I got one a few months back when they were on sale:

Ain't she a sweetie? This gun has been fantastic, it's a Brink's trade in from J&G Sales. I got the VG+ DAO one for just $299, and it's one of the best gun purchases I have ever made. Worth every dime, and shoots like a dream. They aren't available at this price anymore, at least not for now, but if you can get ahold of one you won't be disappointed. As a matter of fact, this is my current bedside gun.

Do you have an address or web site for Shoot Straight? Any contact info would be helpful.

This is a huge Florida gun shop with multiple locations. They purchase 10-20% of the tables at all local gun shows. I'm kicking myself I didn't purchase one of their Model 15's a year ago for $225.

While most likely true in most cases, I've seen some former Correctional revolvers recently
I also see little difference in whether a particular revolver was carried by a city cop or a bank guard.

Just looked at buds. Three listings for M10s
RB 4" MIM for $319
SB 4" forged for $319
SB 4" forged for $289
I'm going by the pic for the MIM/forged, there may or may not be some of each in these batches.
Anyone know the difference between the $319 SBs & the $289 SBs?

I think the point is that some people are willing to pay a higher price for a used gun just because they believe it is a "police" gun. I say buy the gun not the story but to some people it's a real attraction. I doubt these people would want to pay that premium for a regular old used gun or one that was used by a security guard.

There are no Law Enforcement or security guard entities who are still using revolvers that I know of. All have switched to semi-auto pistols... sadly, I think we are seeing the last surplus revolvers brought to market. If you want one, NOW is the time to get one. I got lucky with my Model 64.

Just saw a public transit officer in Maryland with a revolver on his hip. Was just driving by so couldn't get too good of a look at it. Surprised me though.

The officer involved in the shooting in Madison, Wisconsin yesterday was using a service revolver.

Ruger GPNY....

I toted a NIB surplus GPNY revolver, a 4" barrel DA only(spurless) GP .38spl on several security posts & mobile patrol details from 2006-2008. ;)
I used a left hand Blade-tech & Bianchi UM84R for holsters. The stainless .38spl was fine for security work but in 2015, I too would pick 9x19mm or .45acp for armed security posts.
