What do you guys think about this Ziess Scope?

Agree with above statement. And sometime I am the same, I want what I want. And in your case if the scope isn't what you were thinking you can sell it off pretty easy. I do that all the time or return it if if the store allows you too. Not much to loose.

I have one of their original (not made in Asia) Conquests, in 3-9X and the comparable-price Leupold 3-9X is not as good. I know. I have both. The Zeiss is noticeably brighter. I don't know if the older ones compare to the newer ones though. In my limited experience, I would certainly at least compare the Zeiss side-by-side with other scopes similarly priced. You need both in your little mitts at the same time though, to really compare.

I got the Zeiss. Installed and zeroed last night. Clarity and brightness are equal to my Leupold Mk4 LRT 4.5-14x50mm. Good eye relief and FOV at low power. Fits well on my 1903A3. There's actually room to spare between the objective and barrel with the med height signature Z rings so I may look for a set that drops it down a bit. I'll be giving it a workout at the range this weekend as I continue some hunting load development.

Overall, I'm very impressed.

I'm really liking this scope, and the combo seems to be liking 168g Berger VLD hunting bullets with 57g of IMR4340, Hornady cases and federal primers

Nice shooting! You say the Zeiss is as bright and clear as your Mark 4.... wow! I know my Zeiss is brighter than my 3-9X Leupold like I said, but now I have to pull out my Mark 4 LR/T 8.5-25X and compare it to the Zeiss. If the Zeiss is close... that will amaze me. I'll go and buy more Zeiss scopes, that's for sure! Just what I need: a good reason to go buy more scopes!

(especially since the Zeiss is ~1/3 the cost of the Mark 4!)

I bought a used excellent shape 10x , The guy who bought it new did not like it, once it was mounted on my rifle I didn't like it, Traded it back in on consignment the guy who bought it didn't like it, That's 3 owners who did not like the way it performed, I bought a vortex and it was a much better scope I now own 4 vortex scopes and love them zeiss just didn't do it for me at all, Especially for the money this was a 1000.00 scope I bought for 750.00 a vortex for 750.00 is a much better deal IMHO Good Luck

One note on this scope is the widage and elevation adjustments are rudimentary. There's no way to set a zero. That makes it not a good application for a lot of target shooting and load development. Since this scope will be dedicated to a hunting rifle that doesn't bother me. Once I find a couple of loads that this old gal likes I'll zero at 200 yards for the best one and that's where the dials will stay.

I see that there's a company that sells aftermarket dials that do allow you to set the zero for this scope but it's not necessary for my intended use

I have 2 Zeiss Conquest scopes 3x9x40 and a 6.5x20x50 the second one has the rapid Z recital they are excellent scopes, must quick now sleep meds kicking in, one is in a AR-15 now who does that the other is on a 300 RUM

I have a Zeiss Terra in the 3x7 32 size. I have found the elevation and wind mechanics to be excellent. Zeiss appears brighter because they work in the blue part of the spectrum which is a European thing since they do hunt at night there. The glass is ok but its not fantastic but at the pricepoint its not bad.

Update:

Just got back from the range where I was shooting both my 03A3 with the Zeiss and my FN SPR with a Leopold Mk4 LR/T. Side by side in the same conditions I can really see the difference. Much more perefiral distortion at max magnification with the Zeiss vs the Leupold. Understandable considering the 3x price.

When I reported my first impressions I had said the two scopes we equal in clarity. That is not the case. It's still very good value for $300 and better than the Nikon it's replacing, it's just not as good as I originally reported compared to my Leupold

I have Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 RapidZ600s on two of my hunting rifles and Conquest 3.5-10x44 RapidZ800s on two others. Excellent clarity and accuracy of the reticles. I have a Leupy VX3 3-9x40 on one hunting rifle and a Leupy 4.5-14x50 on another. Both brands provide excellent clarity and durability but Leupold offers a, you should pardon the expression, "bulletproof" warranty and customer service. Based on my experience with them, I recently put a Leupy VX-R Patrol 1.25-4x24 scope on my Colt AR 6920 upper. I have been very pleased with Leupold in all particulars...and my Zeiss' have brought home the meat on my Winny M70s.

As my dear old Dad told me in my youth, "It ain't the arrows, Tonto". I think he got that right. I wish he was still here to hunt with.

Cheers,

Harry

Most of my rifles have one of 3 brands/models on them: Zeiss Conquest HD, Minox ZA5 HD or, on the lower end, one with a Bushnell Legend 3-9. None of them with objective lenses larger than 42mm. Why? I was trained in optics by a guy sent over from Austria for Swarovski in '97. He showed all of us the 'difference' that the objective makes in the amount of light that actually is transmitted by each. According to him, for the 'average' eye, there is less than 10 minutes difference in being able to discern details in low-light situations. He added one caveat: depending upon the individual's age/eye status, that amount may be more, or less, than someone else's eyes.
In short, the older your eyes get (or, if you have astigmatism or other problems in your eyes), the less the difference is.
When you compare two different types of GLASS/COATINGS in the same tube, you will see a distinct difference in the amount of light transmitted through the scope. If you doubt that, pick a Vari-x 6 and a Vari-x 1 of the same objective and ocular size and compare them in the same light conditions. The only real difference in the two is the quality of the lenses and the quality/quantity/chemical make-up and application methods used on the coatings. The differences will be obvious.

I have a Terra in the 3-7 32 size. I would not buy another one. I was at Cabela's yesterday and they have the private labled euros there. Same price range, absolutely better glass.

The glass in my Terra is very poor. I don't use it any more and have had zero luck selling it. Euro scopes all optimize blue light because they hunt at night in Europe. They left a coating or two off of the Terra and a bigger objective will not cure this.

I have found the mechanics to be excellent but I would never buy another one.

Cabela's will let you take a scope to the back door and look thru it at night. You will be stunned at how bad the Terra is compared to anything just a slight amount more. The Cabela Euro looks the same but it has Meopta glass and it is far superior glass to the Terra.
