So, my brother works part time at a range and there is a gun shop in there. I was browsing this weekend and came across a colt SAA. It's a sheriffs model in 44 special. According to the shop it's a 1980 model but is mint condition, like brand new. It came from a collector.

The price tag is high but he tells me there is some wiggle room. The color case hardening is beautiful, no doubt, and I love the 44 special caliber. Just not sure if I want to jump on it. What do you guys think is a fair price for this in mint condition? Pics below

As a collector, sure if that's your thing. I'd rather have a Ruger flat top with a bit more barrel for a shooter.

Or a more traditional style Colt if I wanted a pony to shoot (that kinda came out wrong!)

It's your money, but if it was me (and it might well be) and I wanted a shooter, I'd be looking at some recent 3 1/2" barreled ones with an ejector assembly; Being offered by Ruger, Uberti and Pietta. In this configuration the Colt offers few (if any) advantages as a shooter, and if you shoot it the value will drop sharply.

On the other hand if you sit on it, and Colt stops making SAA revolvers - or substantially increase their price on what has become for all practical purposes a custom gun, you might make out like a bandit.

Definitely not being purchased as a shooter.

How's the price going to drop sharply? Say he got it for $1400. Maybe a bit more. Seen any actually Colt sheriff models, or any other Colts, fired or not for under $1400 lately? Its not 2006. Its priced about as low as you'll find a 3rd gen colt these days. Its a 3rd gen. The fired and unfired prices arent that much different.

Howdy

I have four Colt Single Action Armies. Not bragging, just giving my credentials. Mine are all shooters. Two are 2nd Gens, two are 1st Gens. I would walk right past that one. Doesn't interest me at all. No interest in a Sheriff's Model, no matter who made it, can't see shooting it for any kind of accuracy. Not interesting enough for me to buy as a safe queen.

On top of that, the grips do not look original. No Colt markings on them and from the photos they don't appear to fit very well.

My first Colt was a pretty tired looking 2nd Gen that somebody had stripped all the finish off in an effort to make it look old. But it was love at first sight for me. To this day it is one of my favorite revolvers.

Sometimes we walk into a store and get excited about something that really isn't very exciting. If you really want a Colt, there are plenty of them out there. You might just have to look a little bit harder.

My two cents.
