As with everything in life, there is a learning curve, a progression, and as obvious as that seems in retrospect, it's never that clear in the present. I think I need to patent that line, how insightful.

I thought it might be cool to start a thread that explained the categories (ie purpose) of guns you have &why, a categorical list of what item and it's need/purpose.
Example
Home Defense Shotgun - Mossbeg 500
Home Defense Pistol - Kahr K40
Carry Pistol - Kahr PM9, LWS32, Glock 30
Target/Plinking Fun - Ruger target rifle
etc, etc, etc,

Obvioulsy, since it's your collection all reasons/categories are valid but I think it might help others and myself to re-evaluate what's in their collection and why. Recently, it started to become clear to me that the items in my collection needed to have a purpose to justify their existence. As I gained more knowledge and insight, I started to re-evalaute what I have & Why. Hindsight is sooo 20/20, ins'nt it?? I realized that in many ways I was contradicting myself and that forced me down a path where I had to think of things differently. The best way I can describe it is - I categorized their purposes. This process helped me identify areas that I have overlap and also other areas that I am lacking.

Example - I had a few pistols for carry but no HD weapon, ie shotgun/rifle/pistol. why is it that I just perceived the threat to appear while I was out and about? In the spirit of preparedness, why would'nt I be prepared while at home as well and is what I carry what I would want to defend my home with??

I thought it would be coole to creat a categorical list of what you have and why. I thought it would be cool to keep a format of category ---> Specific Item(s) like above. let's have at it!!

PS - If this is stupid then please delete, I'm a couple beers deep!

I started with Colt 1911s and S&W wheel guns... Ran the gauntlet with other makes and models but ended up back home with Colt 1911s and S&W wheel guns... and that's where I will stay-

Just personal preference.

added:

Home Defense Shotgun - Mossbeg 500 18 1/2" OO Buck and 6 bird
Home Defense Pistol - 1911 .45 or snubby Smith .38
Carry Pistol - 1911 .45 or snubby Smith .38
Target/Plinking Fun - 1911 .45 and .22 conversion, Marlin models 60 and 39A, 4" Smiths

Well, some of my guns fit exactly what i expect them to do, but some don't. I have a savage MKII, which works for its intended use of a accurate plinker, as does my walther P22, it is suppossed to be a learning tool sort of thing. About the only thing i would need to change is my AR, i am trying to get into compitition, but the predator rail system i ordered on it is a bit heavy for 3 gun, and it is not legal for high power....and wouldn't be even with a change in uppers. Other than taht, i love it for what i got it for, a easy to clean, accurate, reliable, and fun AR!:D

Wife has Moss 500, her go to gun when the C2 Taser fails to do the job.

I have a Rem 870 mar mag and a M&P .45 to back it up. Wife has the option to get to it as well.

Also the Wife's taser is availible to me as well from time to time.

That is it. Not one more weapon is necessary. Enough.

Next I would be planting claymores at the walkway, A concrete firing position inside the house, and a command control tower onto the top of the house with a Geo-satellite rig capable of calling LEO's from Mars.

Nah.

Enough is enough already in our home.

I was raised around enough guns to open a gunshop back in the day. That did not make me any more smarter than anyone about it. But I did realize that having tens of thousands of dollars worth of bang bang weighting down your house.... not too good in hard times.

6. Diana Model 75 airgun: for kicks

I won't be listing my collection here, but the why? part has me stumped.

I didn't know I had to rationalize a reason I own a particular firearm. This is going down a road I don't think we want to take...

Recently, it started to become clear to me that the items in my collection needed to have a purpose to justify their existence.
I'm glad I'm not bound to that same rule. Sure sounds like it takes the fun out of things.

Why? It all started with the need for a good tool to hunt wild game.

Then it went from there

Remington model 700 .280
Browning BPS 20 ga
Remington 870 sp turkey 12 ga
Springfield Loaded (1911, .45 acp)
Ruger standard .22
Springfield micro compact
various air guns.

what

Really everything started as a US military collection, which has narrowed and defined down over the years.

So, the .30-40 Krag, which was fine was traded for an M1 Carbine (good deal). But, some items still need finding "right" (an M40 similcra would be spiffy). Once I make money again, a SCAR might be nice, but a SASS would be more appropos.

But, a military collection of arms has considerable collateral utility. like a Mossberg 590 with rifle sights, heat sheild and even a bayonet lug could have a use "around the house" if needs must. My wish list has an AR180B very high up there.

But, I have a good collection in .30-06 and .308, and even .30 carbine (and I find .30 carbine to be an excellent item for home defense, it teaches really well, and is handy for ad hoc light use, too).

Safe also has 7.62x39 and .22lr in it, too.

I have all kinds of stuff.

WHY?

Because I can.

Its like we were seprated at birth.

Is it bad if your wife ask you how many guns you have on layaway, and you have to look at receipts in your wallet? I cant answer the panic buying question, I still buy guns at the same rate I always have. Just because I bought a couple after he was elected doesn’t mean I am panic buying, I have full gun safes to prove it :neener:

Because I need them, and if I need them, I want to own them, and if I want to own them, I must need them.

That pretty well justifies everything I own, and it's all I need, but not all I want.

Most of mine have some sentimental value -- gifts from dad or wife...

And I like using them....

It is all I have left from everything else being destroyed by tornado, flood, and fire.

I had duplicates of what works for me, and I had them in different off site locations.
Not just firearms and firearm related stuff either.

I can hold every firearm I have left, by one hand. Still I am armed, and I can run what I have.

I am the weapon, not the firearms.

What and Why

Mauser 98 in 257 Ackley Improved - Rifle of the Century in Ackley's favorite ctg.
Savage 110 in 270 - In memory of Jack O'Connor. Versatile and accurate -
Howdah - It's fun and would most probably change an intruder's mind.
S&W 60 with 3 inch bbl. in .357 - compact and powerful and I can hit stuff

And a boatload more because I like them and they really piss the libs off!
