So I'm sure there is already discussion on this, but let's start it fresh. With the winter coming and flood season in parts of the country, being able to survive for a little while if your car breaks down (or there is civil unrest, or zombies, or whatever you think your emergency might be), what kind of a kit do you keep in your car?

Here is the contents of my duffle bag in my car:

• Wool pants
• Heavy cotton turtleneck
• Sleeveless t-shirt
• Steel toe boots
• Warm socks
• Wool beanie
• Fleece beanie
• Scarf
• Towel
• 2-pack flashlights w/ batteries
• Dehydrated meal (chicken)
• Tan duct tape roll
• Large hunting knife w/ sheath
• Handheld CB radio
• Ice scraper
• 18-pack tissue packs
• Steel wool
• Mini first aid kit
• 2-pack hand warmers
• Flat-pack black duct tape
• Extra 1 gallon Ziploc bag
• 2 toothbrushes
• Travel toothpaste
• Travel shampoo
• Travel body wash
• Travel hand sanitizer
• Feminine hygiene products
• Travel floss
• Pills in labeled container
• Hamlet paperback
• 2 green & 2 orange glow sticks
• Book of matches
• 3-pack road flares
• Fire starters
• Space blanket
• Ice traction slip-ons for shoes
• Large first aid kit
• ACE bandage
• CPR mouth guard
• Tube tent in blaze orange
• Water purification bottle
• 5x 30rnd magazines for rifle
• Ammo pouch for rifle magazines
• Gun cleaning kit
• 3-in-1 gun oil
• Revolver in .22 short
• Leather holster for revolver
• 15rnds for revolver
• Kydex paddle holster for 9mm
• Kydex 2-mag holder for 9mm
• 2 sets earplugs
• Gas mask
• 2x ballpoint pens
• Carabineer clip
• 1 liter water w/ electrolytes
• Collapseable dog water bowl for my dog

Additional items in car:

• Level IIa ballistic vest
• Multi-tool
• Tissue pack
• Ballpoint pen
• 2x magazines for 9mm
• 2x leather holders for magazines
• Leather holster for 9mm
• M3 tactical light
• Jumper cables
• 2 gallon gas can w/ gas
• Bodyguard brand keychain (glass breaker, seatbelt cutter, flashlight)

Dynamic items (not always in car):

• Sig P226 9mm pistol
• AKMS tactical rifle in 7.62x39

It sounds like a lot when you itemize it out, but it's really just an emergency duffle bag and some spare mags in the glovebox. So what do you keep in the car?

My God! Is that an emergency kit or are you moving?

Besides the usual jumper cables, fire extinguisher, first aid kit and the like, I might throw a blanket in the trunk during the three weeks of winter we get down here.

My God! Is that an emergency kit or are you moving?

It started out as jumper cables and road flares. Things were added as I ran across situations where I would have liked to have had them. Plus there's the basic boy scout stuff. Anyway, like I said earlier, it sounds like a lot when it's itemized out like that, but in all reality it's just a duffle bag in the trunk.

If I were to say that I have breakdown gear, a change of clothes, basic survival supplies and some ammo... it wouldn't sound as over-the-top. It's just the fact that it's itemized into a list.

Way too much stuff, you should try to limit to the most essentials. Upgrade the mini first aid kit to a more extensive one, blankets, tool kit, MRE's, water, fire starters, and a knife. All the rest are un-needed pleasentries.

Actually, my stuff takes up about as much space as your suggestions would and as far as I can tell, I have everything that you listed, except for a tool kit. My kit is put together from my personal experiences with things that I have needed or could have used. I was a boy scout, so I like to be prepared. I would explain why everything is in there, but I'm not writing a book. If you disagree with something in particular, I can address it, but as far as a first aid kit, you may notice that I have 2. A small one and a larger one.

Looks more like some of you have the feeling that your wives are going to throw you out of the house...

Everything I might need is in the garage if I feel I'll need it. What do I keep in the pickup other then myself, carry weapon and a spare magazine. Let's see. Music CDs, cassett tapes, flashlight, hand lotion, jack (for changing a flat), 12 VDC air compressor, plug kit for tubeless tires, coveralls, 30 ft 1/2" nylon line (rope for you civilians) and ball hitch. Never thought of keeping some "Jack" in there too. Might have to think about that...

Oh...By The Way...My wife has no intentions of throwing me out. I keep the home fires burnin'.

depends on car...

Flashlight w/ good batteries or one of those magnet-in-a-coil-capacitor-deal lights (this should be required for everyone)
An extra quart of oil! Rags.

Jumper cable
12vDC air comp.
basic tool kit pliers, screwdriver ect., or rusted cheapo fake leatherman
snow scraper
maybe a really basic med kit.

The small children leave odd bits of food for emergency provision, i.e., stale cheerios

Ok, it might seem excessive, but in between the first aid stuff, hunting stuff, and national guard stuff I have in the king cab, it's not far off of what I have. I have an SKS as a truck gun.

But honestly..... Hamlet?! He's not crazy, he's WEAK! I would rather read Lear, Henry VIII, or Richard III.

jumper cables
random tools
tow rope
tomahawk
ka-bar marine knife
folding shovel
what ever gun I am carrying today

I dont get more than 20 miles from home in this truck so nothing to extreme plus i live in a very forgiving enviroment

I'd add super glue... it can be used to fix something, and close a wound.

You must have a big trunk...

Mini first aid kit
LED Flashlight
Energy Bars
Leatherman
Jumper Cables
Fix A Flat
Emergency Blanket
Water
Change of Clothes (season appropriate)
Tennis Shoes
^All this fits in a Backpack cept the jumper cables and fix a flat.
Gun of the Day and Ammo
