So I'm signing up to take the civil service (police) exam this week, and even though I don't want to jump the gun (pardon the pun), I am trying to evaluate which sidearm would be the best for me if I have a choice in the matter. I am looking to see what you LEO's here carry on the job. So lets here it. And if you have a suggestion for a BUG let me here it too.

Plain-clothes assignment...

plain-jane Sig 220. I am finally among the chosen few who work (normally) straight days/weekends off, so I applied a little orange model paint to the front sight to make it easier to find in the daytime. Other than that, I hung a short trigger in it because Momma likes to shoot it, too.

I packed 1911's for ages, and should have tried a 220 a lot sooner.

I carry a HK USP45F Stainless, with a Glock 26 as a back-up in the velcro straps of my vest (zippered shirt=easy access.)

I am questioning the wisdom of getting a Glock 21 and a Glock 30 as back-up. While the Glock 21 is a fine duty weapon, the Glock 30 is a bit on the chunky side to be "hiding" under the shirt. It's not like I have to really hide it anyways, so I guess the bulge isn't that big of a deal. It would be nice to be able to feed your back-up with the mags on your belt. Oh well. Maybe if my HK ever breaks, I'll get that combo (laughing at myself, knowing full-well that HK's will never break!)

Thanks for the replies so far. I've come up with a short list: Glock 17 or 34, Beretta 92, Para LDA, or Sig 220. I know, I know, its the classic 9mm vs. .45 debate. :D I guess if I could make up my mind on caliber, it would be a lot easier to decide.

Well I'm not sure of the department I'm applying for does give you a choice, but I know the Sheriff's dept that the city is in gives you a limited choice in which weapon you carry. I've got to talk to an aquaintence on the dept. I'm applying for to find out.

her's your caliber choice, whichever one the department you work for issues. That way, you always have ammo. We swapped from 9 to 40 last year and now I'm getting rid of some nines and replacing them with 40's of the same weapons. Can't beat free.

Glock 22 is our issued.

I'm carrying an issued Glock 22C, with 165 Gold Dots. BUG is a personal SW 442, with Rem 158gr LSWC HP +P.

Prior to the Glocks we had SW 4586 with 230gr Ranger SXT.

Wierd having two G22Cs on the same LEO thread, not that common a LEO gun.

When I was in law enforcement...I worked for a very small department. We were authorized to carry basically anything that we could qualify with.
I carried a Glock 23 in .40 S&W. But, we had officers who carried 1911's, 9mm Rugers, .45 HK's, and one who carried a P99.
As for BUG's.....I prefered to stick with interchangability, so I had a Glock 27. Others chose to go with a wide assortment of options that I never really quizzed them on too much.

RightIsRight,

I've shot mine ALOT in low light and darkness............there is some flash directed up in a V, but you focus on the front sight and the target, not the flash, so the flash is no big issue and never hindered me in any of my training.

First good luck on the exam, Just relax and try not to worry about every one else in the room.
As for me, In uniform, I carry a series 80 Colt 1911 govt. stainless. BUG is a Glock 26 with the pierce? ? mag base plate, so I have a spot for my pinky. Ammo is Federal Tactical 230 gr. +P for the .45 and Federal Tactical 135 gr. +P in 9mm. All ammo is dept. issued.

Yes, good luck on your exam. Hope you get on. :)

10mm AUTO: S&W 1076; Glock 20. Have qualified with both; can carry either.

I'll probably work in a personally owned Glock 29 as a BUG later this year.
