I've noticed several S&W revolvers are referred to as "kit guns". What does that mean? You have to assemble them yourself? (I know better, but that's what "kit" means in any other context.)

So, what's with the "kit" designation?

A Kit gun was a generally a short barrelled revolver chambered in a small caliber (usually 22LR) that you could keep in your "Kit", your tackle box, knapsack, rolled up blanket pouch or whatever you carried your stuff in while traveling, hunting or tramping. The name had nothing to do with building it but rather where it was carried.

Yep, it's not your Revell that you glue together & paint. Interesting how terms can have so many different meanings.

Useful cartridge in a handy sized weapon that would fit in your kit.

Worthwhile when you are moving out and takin the whole kit and Kaboodle.

Gun goes in kit.
Short haul necessities go in your possibles bag.
Other, luxury and long term stuff go in the Kaboodle.
Not to be confused with Kadoodle....
Which is what klem often hopped over.

C.R.Sam- I thought it was a 'kaDIDDLE' that Klem hopped over...

Good Lord- I'm 35... how do I know this?

Oh yeah, Kit gun- tossed into your fishing kit gear, useful for dispatching the odd water snake or large halibut.

I really like the Smith & Wesson 337 Kit Gun, in .38 Special. Nice light gun with good sights and a little bit longer barrel than most small .38's (3 1/8 inch barrel), it could easily be used to take small game, or for self-defense if necessary. If I was to get any .38 Special handgun, that would be the one.

El Tejon,

I know that "Bravo Two Zero" is a book, I've read it. Are you implying it's also a movie? If so, is it good? Is it on tape/DVD?

Glossomorphology:

'pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
and smile boys, smile
while you've a lucifer to light your fag
Smile boys, that the style'

By that definition my Magnum Carry is a kit gun. I bought it to take fishing/backpacking.
