While searching the net for hi-cap mags, the term "Replacement Magazine "
is often used to describe mags for sale What does this mean?

Thanks
Chris Nemeth

Under the AW ban, you may not manufacture new magazines over 10 rounds. You can, however, replace parts on any legally owned preban magazines. All parts are available and if a person desired, he could purchase the separate parts and make a new magazine.

It means that if you have a pre-ban mags that get crushed by your truck
because you forgot to put your gun bag in the the vehicle before you backed up......

Thats not entirely correct ... the body of the magazine must have been made before the ban.

You can still purchase replacement magazine bodies.

SEMI-AUTO INFINITY MAGAZINE & COMPONENTS

High-Quality, Ten-Round Magazines & Replacement Tubes Give Higher Capacity

TIG welded, stainless steel, flat-panel wall design gives additional strength for long-wearing durability. Complete Magazines are ten-round capacity only and include the standard, black polymer, mag pad; high-quality, tempered, music-wire spring and nylon follower. Replacement Tubes are available in three different lengths. See chart below for capacity specifications. Replacement tubes can be used to repair or refurbish an existing high-capacity magazine. They DO NOT include the base pad, spring or follower. It is a violation of federal law to use replacement tubes to assemble a new, high-capacity magazine.

I take the term "Replacement" in those kind of ads to mean
cheap aftermarket knockoffs that might work if you possibly happen to get one that isn't a piece of junk.
Alot of people confuse Replacement to infer Factory. Most are just that, they can replace the factory one with this "replacement"

I've seen some ads in Shotgun News that just state "factory mags". Well, duh. Aren't all mags made in a factory? Maybe it's just me, but I think the name of the manufacturer is pretty important so you know what you are getting.

I think in this case berettaman has it right.

If you are looking at sites like CDNN, Cheaper Than Dirt, etc. the term 'replacement' means not from the company used by the gun manufacturer when the gun is packaged at the factory, i.e., it is aftermarket. Original equipment (OE) mags are either made by the companies themselves or are outsourced from a relatively good manufacturers like MecGar among others. These are termed as 'factory' as in 'OE from the factory'. The mags could be purchased seperately but still be OE (factory) as it is still the same source as the ones that are package with the guns. Anything else is aftermarket or 'replacement'. Some work some don't. Generally, the best mags to get are OE or licensed contract (mags officially made to OE specs under factory scrutiny). The aftermarket mags are usually built using dimensions either obtained from reversed engineered OE mags or measuring the inside of the receiver, not always the most accurate ways to do things.
