What every new THR member should know...

It occurs to me that we have to refer to this as "shooting to stop" because American culture (law does for the most part though) does not recognize the difference between "murder" and "killing."

Murder is killing someone for personal gain. Killing is not murder.

So, a true response would be: "No, I did not murder him. I reluctantly killed him because he was trying to murder me."

I am a bit new here and love the forums. I usually frequent the reloading section and have found it to be a great source of information. If someone is kind enough to answer a question, you should thank them! I try to express my appreciation for those who take time to help me......a bit of gratitude is usually welcome.

A .223 will stop a charging rhino, but the 30-06 has seen better days. And 1911's and AR-15's never, ever jam, or fail to group within 1/2 in moa. And getting shot with a 9mm. is paramount to a spitball from a 14 year old girl.

A couple of Slug-boy's suggestions:

1. If someone posts something so outrageous, so false or strange you want immediately to harsh on them or make them look like an idiot:

It may be sarcasm or humor. Reread their post carefully. Read back through the thread. Not everyone uses emoticons.

2. Don't be a pedant. There are some very educated, well spoken members who appear not to understand the vernacular or that a word can mean more than one thing.

Okay, sometimes it's fun to be pedantic. Do it with a smile, please. :D

The Difference Between "Magazine" and "Clip"

These two terms are not interchangable. A clip is a part of a magazine. You fill the clip with your rounds and insert it in a magazine (hence the earlier M1 comments in this thread). You can fire rounds from a magazine alone, but you cannot fire rounds from a clip alone, it must be inserted into a magazine to function.
The term clip has just gotten bastardized over the years.

I'll add one more for the oldsters. If you want to get pics to post find some techy who can show you how to set up an account on Photobucket and just copy the url for the pic and paste it into the body of your post.

Not hard. Even I learned how to do it. Need help, just ask?

Don't bother with the clip/magazine distinction. I know it, you know it, but ... http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0027556290479a.shtml

The word 'clip' has been in common use for at least 50 years to mean what we all think of as "magazine" and we ain't gunna change the vocabulary of 200 million Americans. I've been talking (in the real world... strange concept I know) to quite a few firearms owners recently and I have yet to find one... any one... who said anything but "clip". "I put the clip in my beretta 92" "I dropped my Taurus clip" and so on. I'll carry on my end of the conversation using the word magazine and maybe they'll get it but mostly I suspect they just think I'm a bit strange(er) for it.

New thread here for debate:

Also, the remongton 870 is the best pump shotgun in the world, Smith and Wesson's revolver locks are not because of Bill clinton ("They serve a real purpose"), and Glocks are only good because they don't jam, and are very accurate.
They are ugly, lightweight, and hold more rounds than most autopistols. They are blocky, and are not as heavy as a 1911, which is made of steel, has low capacity, needs throating, and ramp polishing, needs after market magazines, new sights, front strap checkering, new full length guide rod, beveled mag well, tuned extractor, Match grade bushing, front serrations, skeletonized trigger assembly, rosewood grips, extended mag release, ambi safety, and re-finished for rust prevention, in order to funtion properly, 1911

seems like an appropriate time to ask.

what's the references to 'trauma plates and duct tape' all about? sounds like a funny story.

I put a magazine in my Glock and a clip in my M1. What do you do?
You can use a mallet to make them interchangeable! :neener:

Good post. What I like about this forum is the level of discourse and the maturity found within. It's very rare to see someone called down or banned, especially in comparison to other firearms forums.

As a side effect (or possibly a coincidence), the level of expertise available here is absolutely phenomenal.

That was an appropriate time to ask, nosliw. :)

As you posted that, I was writing out a bit about THR's Search function.

I'm notnotnot using you as an example of what not to do; to have used the search function for threads which mention 'trauma plates and duct tape' would probably have returned a whole bunch of less-than-useful results. Yours is the sort of question that's best answered by a person, one who remembers having read wisecracks and responses to the topic before. It's part of the folklore.

Here's my bit:

The Search function is your friend.

Searching on a topic might give you a previous thread which answers your question perfectly. If it doesn't, the information you've gained from searching will help you to frame better questions. Doing so informs experienced people who are willing to share their knowledge that you're not interested in wasting their time. It lets them fine tune their responses to give you the information that will be most relevant and useful to you. Everybody wins.

The button for the "Search" function can be found at the top of each page, in the solid colored band which contains the words,

User CP - FAQ - Members List - Calendar - New Posts - Search - Quick Links - Log Out .

Click on the button and enter the term you're interested in. You can also click on "Advanced Search." This lets you refine your search by key word and user name (who posted on the topic), date, and a specific area of THR.

This way, if you want to know, say, about moon clips for .45ACP revolvers (Smith or Colt Model 1917s, Smith 625s and 22-4s, and so forth), you can search in the Revolvers forum only. You can find what you're looking for without having to wade through a lot of threads which mention only magazines for .45 autoloaders.

The Search function can also lead to hours of fun, spelunking for nuggets and gems in the archives.

Stevereno, you forgot that the 870 is second best, the Mossberg 590 is best, better than the 500 because of its metal trigger!!!!!

Good post, Brian.

THR search function sometimes doesn't work well for me, esp if the search term is too common or if you have too many search terms.

Best tip I've picked up is to use Google specifying www.thehighroad.org as the only site to search on. Example:

entering:
trauma plates duct tape site:www.thehighroad.org
gives you: http://www.google.com/search?q=trauma+plates+duct+tape+site%3Awww.thehighroad.org

Voila!

(sorry for the urls in the search term. They appear automatically)
