What firearms "terminology" makes you grit your teeth?

While I am at it, I will mention to them the similarly absurd “Meals Ready to Eat”. Surely they will agree to change that to the much more sensible “Ready to Eat Meals”. Or maybe not, eh! Don’t try telling me that because something has long standing in the military that it is sensible. Just because pig-headed bureaucrats refuse to do what is right, that doesn’t make it wrong.

Military nomenclature makes sense. It goes from the general to the specific. Rifle, M16, Truck, Cargo, 2 1/2 ton, M35A1, and so on.

Biological classification works the same way.

Truck gun, brush gun...

Who the heck hunts trucks and brush?

Responding to several posts in this thread: I love my little 22/32 “KIT” gun. In fact, I think it’s probably my favorite handgun. It’s certainly my most useful handgun if “useful” is defined by “most used.”

My “KIT” gun is a Model 63 Smith, and it goes in my fishing “kit” when I go fishing, in my big game hunting “kit” when I go big game hunting, in my backpacking “kit” when I used to go backpacking, and in my general, bumming around in the hills “kit” when I go bumming around in the hills. I’ve also probably done more plinking with my Model 63 “KIT” gun than any 3 or 4 of my other guns combined.

But no, Jack…I don’t use my “KIT” gun for hunting kits anymore than I use my shotguns for hunting shot. In fact, I have several guns that I don’t hunt anything with. They are still guns.:D

I recall when they were first issued and many of the folks consuming them insisted that MRE actually stood for "Meals Refusing to Exit". :)

I saw the complaint about 45 Long Colt verses 45 Colt. I saw several comments about the 45 ACP. The headstamp on that case is 45 Auto. 45 ACP is the pistol that fires that round.

Huh! I hadn't realized that. I learned something today...as seems I do a lot of days when I'm on THR. Thanks el indio!:)

I'll point out its a line item. its Meals, ready to eat. Its not Ready, meals to eat. Scan down a list of items looking for rations, good luck finding ready. Meals is going to be right there. The military can certainly be strange but the nomenclature does make a certain sense even if its not advertising friendly or ripples off the tongue. Its also far from the only meal likely to be on that list.

As long as it's not a term trying to make firearms evil (assault rifle, high capacity etc) then I dont care.

The "elite" who feel like they know just a bit more than Joe six pack due to terminology, and use it to make themselves seem smart, come off as "operators" and cut folks down simply cause a new person misused a word can discourage a new shooter.

Education on terminology is fine. But from what ive seen, it's more of a scoff and a complaint on the internet instead of a genuine topic on education.

The word gunfighter is also a Hollywood invention, they were called shootist.
I don't think so.

Actually Wikipedia says that "gunfighter" is completely authentic from the period originating in the 1870s and appearing in many newspaper articles of that time. Another popular term of the time was "gunman" which makes perfect sense and is completely utilitatarian. According to this article Clay Allison originated the term "shootist". How widespread it was is hard to discern from the Wiki article.

But it just doesn't matter to the point. "Shootist" may be authentic, but it is so hopelessly contrived, theatrical and absurd that it is just a joke. Same, I might add, as "manual of arms".

Dang, guess I'm gonna have to sell this one, it's proclaiming itself "TACTICAL" on the slide. Guess I should also be glad I don't normally train with civilians (well, except every few years when I've saved enough to go to gun school) who'd make fun of me all kitted ... er, geared up.

How many calibers can you get in the clip?

low power rifle is a rimfire or a PCC. Ten years ago that was only commonly seen on indoor rifle ranges, with high power restriction. Of course bullets will say "not loaded ammunition", %98 of people don't reload, see a price thats 1/5 loaded ammo from a reputable source, get exited, order 1000 useless bullets, get mad, demand a shipping refund. I used to see a lot of high end loaded rounds advertised with cross sections of bullets, leading people to believe that a picture of a bullet, along with the current term for loaded ammunition by the media was just ammunition, especially those that don't know reloading is a thing. Can't expect a company to pay two way shipping, and restocking, or get a bad reputation to streamline their language for the benefit of a small group of reloaders ego's.

I keep a hole puncher in my desk, I hunt paper with it.

When the picture shows bullets sitting there with no brass that should be clue #1.

I think we all have too much time on our hands.
I know I do. But c'mon...I'm retired, it's winter, there's 18" of snow out there, the stew is already in the slow cooker, and I've run out of places to store all the ammo I've loaded in the past 3 weeks. So for me, it's either gripe about things I don't like, or go shopping for another gun I don't need.;) Thank goodness for THR, huh?:)

Or go test the penetration of different rounds through snow. :)

10 pages of words and phrases we don't like.
I was thinking the same thing ... are we now becoming the word police within the gun community? Where does it stop? It's almost as though we are striving to develop our own culture of political correctness.
I think we all have too much time on our hands.
Yep. Think I'll go shooting today ...
