What follows you though the wilderness?

My camping/wilderness gun has been my 6" S&W 586. I bought a S&W 57 in order to have a stronger .41 mag for that purpose, however this one is a first year (1963) and in too nice shape to shoot often let alone carry in a holster. So, I guess I'm going to just have to find a more beat up 57, a 58, a .41mag Ruger of some sort, or a new Taurus Tracker or Raging Bull in .41mag for that purpose. If I have to get the new gun though I might also look for .44mag or .45LC too in case I see something in those that I want more (maybe a .44mag or .45LC Vaquero). For right around the tent and campsite I like my Winchester 94 in 30-30 as well. For knives, I got two nice hunting/woods knives (a Boker Original Bowie and a W.R. Case folder) but they are too nice to risk getting too banged up too so I bought some cheaper Winchester hunting/woods knives for that purpose as well. I will probably add a Ka-Bar soon (which will replace the cheap Winchesters for woods use).

The same sidearm accompanies me into the wilderness that I carry in town, my Springfield Armory WWII Mil-Spec M1911-A1 with 230 grain, Federal Hydra-Shock's in eight round Chip McCormick mags.

Colt Magnum (all your base are belong to us) Carry with some hot 158 gr handloads, hides away in the tacklebox or in a safepacker on a bellyband.

(ok maybe I need to back off my recipie, the Colt is a tad tighter than my Ruger and my nuclear tipped handloads are creating stuck cases.. gotta carry a pencil to pop out the empties! Doh!)

For big game hunting I'm usually packing a Ruger Vaquero 44 mag in a 1860 Style flap holster worn cross draw and a Cold Steel Tanto.

If I'm just "knocking around", varminting or antelope hunting any number of handguns might accompany me. "whats that in your holster Rob?" "Why that appears to be a 1939 Mauser made Luger by golly, what did you bring to show and tell?" "Gee, Rob thats an odd pistol to pack around... " "Well they still haven't made a 4 inch barrel I can screw on to the 357 maximum."

Oh and hey NICE grips on that GP-100!

I bought a Reeder Alaskan Survivalist and Milt Sparks holster a couple of years ago, thinking it would be my backwoods gun. It’s so heavy that it’s just no fun wearing on a belt, and speedloaders are bulky and heavy as well. Now, I’d rather carry my 6-1/4 lb. scoped Remington Ti .308 rifle than a 3+ lb. handgun. When carrying the rifle I throw a Kel Tec P11 in my front offside pocket.

Y'all seem to like big guns and big blades - - -

When hunting or when I might encounter the occasional range bull, I carry a S&W .45 Colt Mountain Gun with stoutish LSWC handloads. Most of the rest of the time, the regular, everyday, .45 Commander with Gold Dot 230s.

Either way, a medium-size Swiss Army knife and a Kershaw Scallion. I keep a small-to-medium sheath knife in my day pack, but not on my belt.

All the optics I need are my bifocals and compact binoculars.

:)

Best,
Johnny

Grips..........

WheelMan, check out this guy if you want to do something with your grips. He can make you new ones or refinish the ones you have. I have both, I can vouch for his skill, quality and service. He was even written up by John Taffin in American Handgunner.

When I'm out woods bumming I usually carry my stainless Bisley Vaquero in .45 Colt, 4 5/8" barrel, loaded with some type of heavy hardcast. Knife is usually a Buck 110.

When concealment is not an issue;
.45 Colt Blackhawk
Gerber Bowie

This rig hides under a coat or untucked flannel shirt.
.45 Colt S&W Mountain Gun
Case XX Damacus

If deep concealment is really required I am not uncomfortable with my day to day urban rig. I just switch off to 230 grain Gold Dots.
.45 ACP G36 Glock
Gerber E-Z Out

As an ultra-runner I spend a lot of time training in the woods. I don't see too much of anything following me during the day, but at night all sorts of creatures, real and imaginary, seem to be stalking me.

I carry a Kahr P9 (weight is important on a 30 mile run) for the real creatures and a crucifix for the imaginary ones.:D

Well if you plan on sticking a pig.. you might need a pig sticker. When I'm bird hunting a use a Shrade old timer.. still carry a big pistol.

Sadly, I lack a good hunting dog and a place to keep one. Even a not so good hunter still makes a fine companion in thewoods.

Camp gun is any number of .40 or .45 pistols for two legged animals but when wife and I are looking to shoot wolves, with camera of course, in remote backwoods of Idaho and Montana my Winchester 444 Marlin or Ruger 45.70 with hardcast goes along with .45 Colt Bisley with hardcast as backup. Extra film and ammo is always at hand. I especially like the Winchester which is very compact and light over the shoulder with sling to be able to shoot with camera. Bob T.

Well, I don't have any pics, but when my family moves to Vermont, a S&W 686 and an ATC 'hawk will be on me during my walks through the woods.
