There were a bunch of them out there cheap? Anyone know a cheaper source of mags and wood grips?

You are right: It wasn't all that long ago that SOG and a couple of others were selling the P5s, advertised as police trade-ins, for under $400 with a holster and case and extra magazine. Now, when you see them advertised, you have to pay $600 for the more for the exact same gun with the exact same import marks.
The best deal on magazines is to stay on the hunt at the auction houses; I've picked some up from Auction Arms at reasonable prices. Sometimes Earl's repair shop will offer a sale on the P5 mags, but it doesn't happen often and you have to be quick.
As for wood grips, I've ordered two sets from here

and have been happy with the quality and fit (after the normal adjustment). Pete is a good guy, and his selection and prices are pretty doggone good as well.
