Hi all. I just ordered a stainless 6.5" Ruger Blackhawk from my lgs and will need a holster for it. I'd prefer leather but am open to other options as well.

Simply Rugged is my go-to source for revolver holsters.

The Sourdough, 120, and Cattleman are all excellent. Which one will depend very much on your body size/shape, how much concealment matters, and how much retention you desire.

Well let me see. I'd say retention and ease of access are pretty important on a hunting handgun.

These are my two favorites for single action carry.

The bottom holster is an El Paso Saddlery "Threepersons". It is a decent hunting holster, but does leave a lot of the gun exposed. I prefer the top holster for hunting. It offers great protection, good retention, and fast access. It also is the highest quality holster I have ever seen. Milt Sparks 200AW.

A Bianchi Lawman would be a nice leather option at about $100. A Purdy Gear single action carved holster for the deep pocket fella needing a show-off holster would be worth consideration.

I have a Diamond D belt & holster combo. Wore them for the first time last weekend in some hilly country and I have zero complaints. Holster doesn't move around and it stays up against your body, not flapping in the wind. I got the 1.75", lined belt to go with it. I wear the belt a lot more and I like it. I would prefer Chicago screws and a roller buckle, that would make it about perfect.

Galco SAO Like being able to carry cross draw or strong.
I have the same holster for my Blackhawk.

Don't use it much anymore but its what I have for my Blackhawk. I don't like cross draw much anymore and trying to sit in a vehicle with a 6.5 inch revolver on your strong side hip does not work for me. When I carry my other 6.5-inch revolvers they get carried in a Gunfighter Kenai chest rig.

I have several holsters from Simply Rugged. Big fan.

The only one I regret having made is the Flap Jack I ordered for my 5.5” Blackhawk. I find that the pistol is simply too long to be comfortably carried strong side in a high ride position for me. The holster does too good of a job enveloping the gun to be able to get a clean draw or reholster. It carries reasonably well cross draw, but kind of digs in my hip a bit. So unfortunately, this is the one Simply Rugged holster I have that is in brand new condition and has never been worn out of the house. Since I’m left handed, I think finding a buyer may be a bit tricky. :)

By contrast, the Sourdough Pancake I have for my 4 5/8” New Vaquero is incredibly comfortable, especially worn crossdraw. It’s my favorite gun to carry. Conceals very well. But that length is about the furthest I think I would push the high ride pancake design.

If I had the money and wherewithal to order again for my Blackhawk, I’d get a crossdraw Cattleman. This is what my instinct had told me to order first, but I ignored it and went for the Flap Jack.

Anyway, huge fan of Simply Rugged, and Rob is a real stand up guy to work with.

I've carried my Blalkhawk..357 in a Hunter 1000J-42 sense 1976, hunting & ATVing. Fits well and has served me well. habiker

For hunting, I've carried hip and shoulder, shoulder was OKAY, (could have been the rig) but I'm thinking the geniuses that began marketing chest carry aren't praised enough, seriously worth checking into....
My idea of hunting can or cannot include rifles, shotguns, and knives, as well as using them, I hunt with people who may need extra help, so I also carry pods and occasionally people, I may be belly crawling through sage brush one week, and 4wheeling the next, some holsters can specialize in each thing I do, but a chest carry just works for everything....well except for broncing out a frisky Colt, then it's a behind the saddle carry I guess lol!
