What Is This Red Band On 9x18 Ammo?

About 25 years ago I bought some Norinco and S&B Makharov ammo. I jusy noticed that some of the cartidges have a red band around the neck of the casing, and the primer. Why the red band?

To help seal the brass. It can gum up after awhile.

Its a moisture sealing compound.

S+B and others do that as noted above, it is a moisture sealant.

As alluded to, it seals the case mouth and primer pocket against moisture.

And if you can find green ones they make great Christmas decorations...just leave open plastic trays of them on coffee and end tables to brighten up your home at Christmas. Sitting them under a lamp helps to attract the eye as the shiny brass and colorful stripes draw the eye of admiring visitors. They look wonderful...until the wife gets home and makes you put them away...
