I think its for mounting optics. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, it's a standard Russian siderail mount for optics, like this Kobra reflex sight on my Romanian AK:

Well, the "PAT PENDING" on the stock is from my uncle, Leo Livingston, and Combat Exchange, Inc. The later molds actually had his name on them right before Advance Technolgies bought him out, just my 2 cents . . . .

I'm not sure if you were joking or not lol but it is possible deppending on how old your uncle is. The gun itself is roughly 20-30 years old.

Anyways is there anyway this can be removed without making a "mess" of the gun? It's not a big problem but I was thinking of changing stocks and don't want to have to cut out for this thing that I don't even use.
