What is with all the shortmag ammo?

Everywhere I go there is almost no regular 300win mag ammo but a whole shelf

dedicated to 300WSM and another whole shelf dedicated to 270 wsm

Are these calibers really that popular. You would think the classics would out sell them.

I think the opposite is true. No one is buying the WSM's, which is why the shelves are so full of them. I see a lot of rifles in WSM calibers being clearanced at the gun shops.

I'm thinking this as well.

I feel like they are a fad.

You would just expect stores to stock more of the regular stuff but they are dedicated so much space to the shortmags

The regular magnums are probably sold out with no one buying the shortmags.

Magnums are silly for deer, .308 is all you could need for deer. shot placement is key.
But they are good for bigger stuff.
I think everyone is right. regular 300Winmag is sold out.

I would agree but there isn't even a spot on the shelf for it. Its not like there is empty space where it once was. It is clear they didnt plan for alot of regular 300 win.

I do live out east so that may have some effect on the cartridges popularity but they do have pently of 300wsm which is the same thing so I dont get it.

The biggest obstacle I have to buying one is price. I'm not going to pay $5-10 more per box/20 just to get a shorter bolt motion.

You wouldn't think it would be anymore expensive, the cost is already ridiculous for 300win

short mags

the ammo for short mags here is flying off the shelfs, especially 300 and 270 wsm,very popular with hunters,300 win mag is just sitting there,there is no fad ,300wsm has been out for ten years,270 wsm right behind it,I personally know as I own all three calibers 270 wsm 300wsm and 325wsm.

Some sporting goods departments (within larger chain stores) tend to stock ammo only for the guns they sell. If they didn't sell rifles in standard .300 Win Mag but did sell rifles in .300 Short Mag, then they're gonna stock the Short Mag ammo but not the other.

This is somewhat true, the 'short mags' have been moving quite slow for sometime now, the idea of a short, fat cartridge is a good one, but it's not worth the increased cost of the ammunition in most folks opinion.

After all, a scant 1/2" less bolt throw or a couple hundred feet gain in velocity, doesn't make up for the increased cost of ammo for these rifles, so the echos of customers sound.

It's hunting season..... 99% of guys don't own short mags and only buy ammo right before hunting season..... that's why much of the regular stuff is gone.

Short mags were all the rage here for a few years but most of the dealers here have put them on clearance and now you don't see but a few.

They're great cartridges but they kill on both ends, ammo is too expensive and most guys have figured out you don't need a magnum of any kind to kill a deer, elk, moose or bear.

The old 270 and 06 have been killing them just fine for 100yrs in the case of the 06.

I've had a 300WM for 30yrs... it's beautiful, very accurate and I'll keep it until I die. But it rarely gets shot and has not been hunted with in over 25yrs. I killed a Bull Elk with it in 1984... shot through both lungs and the heart... it ran about 25yds and collapsed.

Funny the Elk I killed the year before was shot in the same spot with a 30-06, stumbled about the same distance and fell dead.

The WM shot was about 150yds and the 06 shot was about 210yds

Cabela's Bargain Caves are stocked full of short magnum reloading dies and no normal reloading dies. Meaning no one is buying them.
