What is the best bang for the buck in a typical service type pistol. I define a "service pistol" as loosely follows.

1. Should be in a serious caliber like 9mm, .40S&W or .45ACP

2. Should be a hi-cap since more is better!

3. Should be a modern and safe design.

4. Should be of reasonable size. 3-5" bbl medium-medium large sized frame.

5. Should be either a DA or striker fire gun, sorry but SA only guns are not considered service pistols anymore so the 1911 and BHP don't count. I know they are fine guns but the police and military are not going to use them anymore so they are not service pistols anymore. Get used to it and stop crying about.

Some of the many guns I would consider a "service pistol" are:
Glock 19, 17, 23, 22, SA XD, Walther P-99, H&K USP, S&W 5906, Ruger P-95, P-89, P-97, CZ-75. There are many many others but I just wanted to give some idea of what I consider the term to mean.

My vote goes to the SA XD-9. I think it gives the most bang for the buck. It is as good or better than the Glock and costs less. The Glock is considered the gun by which other service guns are measured by many but they and not perfect and IMHO cost more than they should. The SA XD proves my point. There is nothing the Glock will do that a XD can't do for at least $100 less. IMO, that makes it one of the better deals out there.

I predict the SA XD or the CZ-75 will be the winner of this poll. lets see.

Best bang for the buck to me is still the CZ-75, followed closely by the G17.

I am not a big fan of the 9mm but the above guns are accurate, reliable, and extremely durable. Lots of bang for the buck.

Steyr M9/M40. Normal capacity (i.e. hi-cap) mags can be hard to find though. Otherwise, I'de say any of the Ruger P series pistols (except the P85).

Springfield builds a better Glock

Even though it is a single action gun (which you excluded in your criteria), I have go with the Springfield XD9 with the new 16 round mags. I believe it's the best gun for the money right now.

sig 220 226 or their new DAK models...had beretta continued with the cougar line...any of them...

FN FiveseveN,

1. Serious caliber as 5.7x28, penetrates body armour up to 200 metres (even civil ammo, such as SS192, SS195/7), still doesn't go through human body, thus minimizing collateral damage. Also low recoil, similar to 22LR

2. Magazine capacity 20+1 double stack, really like a rifle. :D

3. Very modern design, fully plastic - light, durable, recoil absorbing, good to clean.

4. Very reasonable size, considering the cons, also easily concealed when using right holster.

Prize is in the same range as USP, P99, Glock

CZ-75B. You can spend more money on a gun, but you won't get more gun for your money.

XD 9 can't be beat for the price. Ruger's centerfire semi-auto pistols are great too.

My vote goes to the XD.

are there better guns? yes
is the XD my favorite? no

but you said best for the money. IMO this gun is hard to beat for under 5 bills.

What, no votes for the Sig P-239? Seriously good carry gun for civilians like my self or police/military types...comes in 9 or 40 S&W flavors.... Weighs a mere 25.2 oz empty and in 9mm holds 8 in the mag plus one up the snout..mine has worked well for the last 3 years..also, just something I have been reading about lately is that it seems our military is issuing a few more 1911's in .45 to our Special forces type folks...Don't even want to start a caliber flame war on .45 vs 9mm. I have them both and like them both...Oh well, that's my 2 cents worth.. good luck...
