Another great gun in film is Bohannon with his Griswold. If you can’t tell I have an affection for the Reb pistols. But they should have given him a Dance and Brothers.

Its too bad he never used a Griswold in the movie. Its a brass framed 1860. If ya watch the video of the tv gun techs from the show they even make false clames that it was like a "magnum" of their day. I looooooove the show. But i wish they would have gotten more knowledgeable gun techs. Also wish that Bohannon would have kept using an open top instead of switching him toa Remington. Also wish they would have given him a Dance and Brothers... Would have been a true large caliber southern gun. But russell...i agree...great show and one of the greatest shows ive ever seen

Is it just me, or do the gun "sounds" in Silverado seem more realistic?
Like that opening scene in the line shack - when he uses the rifle, you can hear the action and the brass eject and the new round feed clearly, not just the kachunk you normally hear in movies.

As I recall the movie was meant as an homage to the classic westerns that the writer grew up watching.

I can see that as it had just about every plot element one could think of,,,
Four main characters with four distinct story arcs,,,
Plus a ton of extra character arcs.

Kind of an amalgam of every classic western ever made,,,
Very fun to watch, especially the opening scene.

I used to watch westerns alot more than I do now. Hell, I used to watch alot more movies PERIOD.

But a number of westerns do stand out for me. I'll set up a list of 5 and try to fill them in. They might not always stay in whatever lineup I put, though. Kind of depends on my mood...

1. The White Buffalo
2. The Outlaw Josey Wales
3. Young Guns
4. Pale Rider
5. Chato's Land

Can you tell I like Eastwood, Palance and Bronson??

However, I do wish I had seen more with Eli Wallach as a bad guy. I'd love to see a revised version of The Good The Bad and The Ugly where Eli gives Clint a much harder bargain. I love Wallach and Palance in the same cruel, sinister type of role.

Sorry, but John Wayne just never impressed me much as an actor. He was ok. I kind of preferred him in military roles over westerns.

Edit: I really HAVE to add Treasure of the Sierra Madre...ala "We don't need no stinking badges!" to the list!

Always loved the Tag line of "The good the Bad and the Ugly" "For three the civil war wasn't Hell, it was practice".

Favorite Guns in the movie has to be the Gatling guns with the Broadwell ammo drums.. You know, you just
do not get enough of those.

Thus far it appears I'm the only one who both thinks of Cold in July as a modern Western, and thinks highly of it as such. Doesn't bother me but it makes me wonder how many folks posting on this thread are familiar with the movie?

I wrote Young Guns as one of my choices... but I had to Google a "movie with Jack Palance that involved a Gatling gun massacre". I couldnt remember what movie the scene was from! Gatling gun massacres always make movies memorable.

I didn't recall the Broadwell drum; you usually see the tall Bruce feed. I like the Accles drum. Only 60 shots but positive feed, even upside down.

Was The Wild Bunch the first movie with slow motion fights? Phooey.

Traditional Western show that I haven't seen mentioned: Deadwood. Timothy Olyphant as Sheriff Bullock was a stand out.

Modern takeoff on western: Justified, again with Timothy Olyphant as US Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens. Many great shoot outs to include the one with Eric Roberts using a GP100. Then the final showdown with Boon and his single action and Raylan with the Glock.

Anybody know exactly what Glock model Raylan carries in Justified?

I think the 1st slow Mo gun fight goes to Bonnie & Clyde..

Bonnie & Clyde..

Moviegoer anecdote. Bonnie and Clyde (Beatty and Dunaway) stopped to buy food. Even bank robbers have to eat.
They came out with a 1/6 size paper grocery bag about 3/4 full and a bill for $6.00.
My Dad said: "I was working in a grocery store that year and you could not pick up $6 worth of food."

That remake of Tonto an the Lone Ranger Movie was pretty lame till they brought out the Gatling Guns... Then I drifted off to sleep till they played the William Tell song
