If you could only have one caliber rifle what would it be and why? I think I would take a .308 winchester because it can take pretty much any North American game and is a great target round to.

30/06

It will do anything a. 308 Winchester will do plus more. I know that it is not as popular as it was 40 or 50 years ago but it will with proper loads handle anything on North America including the big bears if necessary. People will argue the point but it is up to the task.Ammo availabilty is a strong point and it is a caliber that has been handloaded with more different combinations than any other caliber on the face of the earth.

Wouldn't work...can't hunt groundhogs in many places with anything over. 22 can't hunt deer with anything less than. 23

5.56x45

Because my go-to rifles are chambered in it. For me, it's the best defensive long arm cartridge. Works great in an AR, plentiful, reasonably priced, tons of options, effective defense against 2 legged predators, moderate recoil

30-06 just does everything and performs quite nicely, the loads for this cartridge is just incredible. Think about how many have come from this! From the 50BMG (scaled up 30-06) to a .243 (30-06 -> .308 -> .243).

MANY chamberings have spawned from the 30-06, and most of them are very successful.

If God shot, He'd use one, but He seems to favor a double-edged sword.....

The 308 won over the 30-06. May the day never come I can only have one but.... If it ever did I guess the 308 Winchester would be it.

Well,

Just to be different, 7mm 08.

(Well hell, 30-06 would be repetitive and .308 doesn't stir the pot! Believe me, I could live with it.)

Hands down it would be the 7mm RM and second to that would be the .270 win.. Either will definitely drop any N.A. game with ease, it can be loaded to perform as a very accurate varmint gun, and it will accurately shoot long distance with plenty of velocity to drop big game at 700 + yards.

It's down falls include, it makes for a terrible small game cartridge, it can develop throat erosion pretty quickly with high velocity loads, and it kicks like an angry mule.

I have to say .308. I really wanted to say 30-06, but whenever I buy a rifle I need to consider my wife. She can shoot 30-06 as well as anybody else, but she can shoot .308 a lot longer. To be honest I don't like shooting more than 10-15 rounds from a bolt gun at a time. The M1 on the other hand, I can shoot that all day and never get tired of it.

God forbid there ever be a situation that any of us NEED to put a lot of lead down range all at once.
