Inspired by Doug.38PR's thread, I'll try to get a slightly clearer version of the question. What action type do you PREFER, and why?
Options:
SA - Traditional single action like the 1911 and Hi-Power, etc
DA/SA - The standard SIG/Berretta/Ruger, etc style DA/SA
DAO - The standard DAO like whats offreed on the above pistols
SFA - Striker Fired Action. like Glock, Springfield XD, Taurus Pro, S&W Sigma, etc
LDA - A lighter DA that is precocked like Para's LDA, HK's LEM, SIG's DAK, etc.
Other - Anything I didin't cover

DA/SA. I am going into law enforcement and there are a lot of pluses to that setup such as second strike.

To me, the point of automating the process is to get that good SA pull. If I can't get that, I'll take a nice, iced-down DA revolver.

For range/target shooting, SA all the way for the short trigger pull.

For CCW and home defense, give me a reliable striker fired handgun everytime. My current lineup includes a Kahr P9 as my carry gun, a Springfield XD9 Service as my car gun when I'm on the road, and an XD40 as my primary home defense weapon.

i agree with ^. single action is great for the range, and striker-fired is great for carry. actually, single action is good for carry, too, but striker-fired guns are usually more comfortable to carry.

I like Single Actions the best, but that said, my preferred pistol is the Glock. I don't have a problem with Glock's trigger and find that even the stock trigger on a Glock is pretty decent if you give it a shadow of a doubt and give it a hundred rounds or so to get used to it. The Glock trigger is mushier than a good single action trigger, but has a nice short positive reset, which is good. The biggest thing is that, like the SA, the trigger pull is the same every time, and there at least isn't a lot of take up on it. Or at least on mine.

I can't stand DA/SA triggers. Why settle for two crappy pulls on the same pistol when you can have one decent to great trigger pull? I don't get it, it makes no sense to me. Even the so called match trigger on my USP Tactical wasn't that great. The single action pull wasn't bad, but there was all that slack. I've pulled triggers on SIGs and Rugers and Berettas as well. None of them felt that great to me compared to even the stock trigger on a Glock. I just can't stand DA/SA--it is everything a trigger shouldn't be to me. Even DAO is preferrable to me.

For the enjoyment of shooting I prefer SA.

I carry DA/SA though because I prefer "draw and shoot."

I've also begun to focus training my off-hand to get the basics down that my strong-hand normally does. Shooting and reloading are a little easier if everything is ambidextrous on the gun, ala HK P2K.

For a defensive pistol, I usually prefer SFA. The simplicty of this action is great for a high-stress situation.
I also like DA/SA without a manual safety but with a decocker, like most SIGs have, but only if the DA pull is very managable.
Really, there are many fine guns in almost every platform. I'm not very comfortable with the SAO 1911 platform, but it sure does shoot well and has lots of fans for a reason. It works very well for many people.
Still, if I knew I was headed for a gunfight (and was limited to a handgun) I'd want a Glock. Well, make that a few Glocks. :)

If I knew I was headed for a gun fight, I'd have a 12 guage.

If I knew I was headed for a gun fight, I wouldn't go...

Good point. I've never lost a gunfight I boycotted. :)
Of course, sometimes folks are very customer-service minded, and they'll even deliver the gunfight to your door. Kinda like Domino's Pizza. If you're not dead in 30 minutes your funeral is free.
OK, off to court. Have a good day folks.

DA/SA, no manual safery with a nice decocker - like HK P2000 V3 or USP Compact.

Wow, no LDA fans out there, and SA is holding a significant majority; this is turning out to be more interesting than I thought.
