What is your worst gun accident?

This happened to a friend of mine....

He had a ruger 10/22 jam up. To the point where the rifle had to be taken apart to get the magazine out. Well, my friend turned around to use the bed of the pickup to do the work needed and my friend, as he was pulling the stock off the gun, fired the live round into the back window of the truck.

Now, the round went through a truck box, through the back window and into the mirror where it stopped. My friend was at an unsupervised range but still beat feet outta there, I was totally embarrassed. I mean, He was...

Buying a M44 that had been "Bubbatized" with a welded bolt and a scope. for $200 4 years ago (First gun purchase)

Need to take off the scope and see if I could get $50 for the rifle, and buy myself a REAL M44 ;)

buying a .22 that just sits(my girl friend loves shooting but dosent shoot that much.... And a H&R shotgun.... should've spent the 50-150 more and had a Mossberg...

But you guys have some crazy stories and They are helping me to realize that you ALWAYS observed the 4 rules. Even with a "unloaded" firearm.

left two holstered handguns ontop of rubber packing boxes, then allowed them to be covered/unseen. Then wife lifts lid to get into box nocking my babies to the carpeted floor. no discharge. Don't recall that they were loaded/chambered because my bigest fear was damaging the guns, a glock and a sw revolver.

My one-and-only ND happened at my very first IPSC practice match about a million years ago. I was shooting a Hi-Power that had not had the magazine disconnect removed.

At the end of my first run, I dropped the mag that still had ammo in it and ejected the chambered round to unload and show clear. Then I got flustered and reinserted the same mag instead of the empty one I'd carried for the final hammer drop.

Yep, dropped slide, pressed trigger, and nearly wet myself. Fortunately, muzzle discipline was in place and the round went downrange into the traps.

For a newbie shooter, it was terrifying. It was also an invaluable lesson.

Bought a used rem 1100 from a pawnshop....I'll never do that again
$200 for gun...took out shooting works ok for maybe 10 rounds then the extractor wouldn’t allow the bolt to close.... Took to gun smith for a replacement bolt $60... they then told me the feed latch shouldn't fall when you remove the trigger assembly so they had me leave it with them they charged another $30 to clean and swege the feed latch in place. They pointed out the stock had some water damage and the but pad was the wrong size and recommended I take care of that. So $90 at the gunsmith I have a great Remington 1100 that works exactly as it should.... I’m like a kid the day after Christmas...then I go to Cabela's and get the mossy oak stock and grip, mossy oak sling...(note to self...remove sling for Elite Team Fighting...) And swivel sling mag cap and the cool shrink camo stuff you put on the receiver and barrel.now my used 12 year old 1100 cost as much as a new one...there is reason people stopped shooting that gun and sold it cheep…

first was a slam fire in a Ruger MKI, locked a new magazine in, drew the bolt back and let it go home...BANG! I UNLoaded it, cleared the chamber and tried again....nothing. Never DID know what happened, not happened again in 25 years since. Muzzle was downrange in the gravel pit...so no real foul.

Second was up hunting with a R721 in 30-06. It had been raining and then cooled down and froze, when I left my stand I had the muzzle straight up (about 1 foot from my R ear) and cycled the safety as it felt like it was partly out of position, finger was curled around the STOCK, no where NEAR the trigger, was rewarded with a LOUD BANG!...my ear was deaf for an hour and the ringing lasted several days. apparently there was ice in the trigger mechanism and cycling the safety dislodged the sear. Never happened since no matter HOW many times I've tried to MAKE it happen. so dont know. We all wondered WHERE the bullet came down....

Not an accident, but my brother had some sort of ancient 22 semiauto years ago. He said it was giving him problems. I loaded 15 shells in the magazine, pointed it at a target, cocked it and squeezed the trigger. All 15 rounds went down range in about 1-1/2 seconds.

Shot a hole in the return air duct in the floor. I knew it was unloaded, but still pointed it in a safe direction, fortunately.

entropy, it pains me to just look at that pic. Hope you mended well.

Mine was a Russian Makarov that went full-auto on me, firing the last round through my left hand. Ouchie.

I was carrying a stack of pistol cases with the top one being a soft side with a 1911 in it. The top one slid off and hit the pavement breaking the adjustable rear site.

Mad at myself does not cover it. Luckily it was only a $70 mistake.

My only two issues have been at the range and guns were pointed safely down range at the time.

First was a slam fire while clearing a stovepipe in my Uzi. Changes required by ATF to inhibit conversion to full auto was the root cause. I was pretty new to semi-autos at the time, motivated me to learn a lot more!

Hang fire in a .22lr Ruger 22/45, was about to do tap-rack-bang when the round went off. This was with Remington bulk pack from Wal*Mart last year! I've since learned to suppress the tap-rack-bang reflex when shooting rimfire, surplus, or reloaded ammo.

Can't be sure the bullet hit the backstop in either case but both ranges had good safe zones beyond the berms. I'm pretty sure the Uzi round went into the canopy of a nearby Pecan tree.

--wally.

I was shooting a Browning Auto-5 and rested my thumb on the bolt, just forward the bolt handle, before firing. Bolt closed on my thumb and excised a fairly large chunk of it. Still have the scar.
Are you a southpaw? The only position I can fathom this happening is shooting it left handed.

Or am I all missing something?

Poper

<Oh! And my worst gun accident? Letting my brother borrow my (then) new Remington 788. It came back a couple years later with deer camp scars. >

Gun accident

I got shot in the butt with rock salt for trying to lift a watermelon when I was 14. Lately, though just squib, but I caught it.:)

A few months ago I must have fallen asleep while fondling my bedside Blackhawk. I woke up at about 6AM to a big THUNK...reached for my gun...then looked on the floor. I basically slept on top of a fully loaded .44mag until I kicked it out.:uhoh:

It usually happens when one is working on the gun. I nailed my finger when I was letting the bolt forward slowly on mine (was trying to help a THR member whose gun wouldn't feed IIRC). It stopped when the shell carrier was raised. Unfortunately as i was pushing it forwards to free it it snapped closed on the pad of my finger.

Sounds like a Savage 87 (which was also sold under numerous other names). Odd gun, as it is actually striker fired and holds the bolt back until you release the trigger. They are fairly notorious for "gaining" select fire capability as they wear.

I was shooting one recently that doubled and jammed hard. After disassembling the gun and clearing the jam (which seemed to have occured because the cartridge carrier had lifted the shell before it had fully cleared the magazine tube; deforming it) I began loading single rounds into the gun to check function. On the fourth round the gun slamfired. That is probably my worst gun experience, and hopefully will remain so.

about a month after i got my .22lr single six i put 6 empty shells in and cycled pulled the trigger like 3-4 times and the....BAM!! it scared the crap out of me it went into an old tv i was gettign ready to toss out so luckily no one was hurt

second i had a slow burn in my 12guage while shooting skeet....about 4 seconds after i pulled the trigger it went off but i was ready after it didnt go off i kept it shouldered and pointed it down range then started to count to 30 like i had been taught

Back in 85 had a factory 45acp reload blow the mag and one round out the bottom of my 1911, recoil felt like my 44mag. no damage to the gun, just the mag and my hand.

that 1911 is still going strong today

That is also when I started reloading my own.

Touching off a 22 inside the house.

Shooting a 243 out the window of my house at a crow. Almost blew out the glass from the concussion.
