In U.S. military nomenclature, M1, has nothing to do with a firearm. Has to do with any first model piece of kit. The M1 Rifle was never called a Garand by the U.S. military.

And while we're at it, let's retroactively retire the name "Springfield Armory" as of 1968, and let the boys in Geneseo, IL come up with their own name.
