What movies/tv shows portray civilian gun ownership as totally normal?

Holy Crap! How could I forget Parks and Rec!

Nick Offerrman's character Ron ,deleted. Swanson is a gun owner. Heck he is shown with a (tacky) gold plated revolver in the credits! There has been numerous time when guns have been depicted in the show and I can only think of once when it was relevant to the plot.
Unfortunately, Nick and his wife Meagan Mullally, Amy Pohler, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, and a lot of others just did a big anti-gun TV spot, so no more Parks & Rec for me.

Doogie Howser MD, guns.....

It's older, but I always had a + impression of a episode of the ABC sitcom; Doogie Howser MD.
Doogie(played by actor Neil Patrick Harris of the hit show; How I met Your Mother) was a young doctor/med student. After a violent crime, he decides to get a pistol for defense. :uhoh:
The TV series could have trashed the gun industry or portrayed the gun shop staff in a - way, like a few film & TV shows do, .
The show instead had a FFL holder/gun shop manager who was polite, professional & explained to Doogie why gun safety/security is so important. He taught Doogie the basics & wasn't pushy or macho.
It was a good image of gun owners & those sales clerks who act like mature adults.

JMR40, I was also going to say Did You Hear About the Morgans. You beat me to it. While the wife is also law enforcement, which technically breaks the OP's rules, it really just portrays, comedically, that everyone in Wyoming has guns. While they did use guns defensively, it was largely ineffective, secondary to the plot, and mostly for comedic value.

It's tough to find something that truly fits the OP's description, other than reality shows, because it's a logical conclusion that when things go south they go to the gun owner for help.

ETA: my wife made me watch Dr. T. and the Women with Richard Gere. Terrible movie, but the were skeet shooting in it. I believe Overboard, Secondhand Lions, and Cruel Intentions also had sporting clays scenes, but it's been a while.

I remember an episode of House M.D. in which Gregory House keeps a pistol that belonged to his father (Played by R. Lee Ermey) who happened to be a former marine.

Like this thread? ;)

Was it a Glock?......

Was House's pistol a Glock? :D
It's animated but one of the last King of the Hills had a scene where the Hills were startled by a possible break-in.
Bobby, the young son, runs in the living room with the gun safe. ;)
Some forum members knock KOTH, but overall the series had a pro-gun, pro 2A attitude.
They had a episode where Hank had to learn proper marksmanship(Prepare for take-off.). They had a few scenes with guns & Dale's gun club. A later series episode had Minh using a skeet shotgun & comparing it to her father's AK47 in Laos. ;)

The cartoon ran for about 12 years in total. I still watch it often in syndication.

I believe House's pistol was a 1911 variant, he kept it next to his father's sword as a keepsake after he died.

Was that the same episode of KOTH in which Bobby is naturally gifted with good marksmanship?

American Beauty comes to mind. Annette Benning went from complete noob to buying her own gun and enjoying a simple trip to the range. There were no histrionics or recriminations concerning her acquisition or use of her 3rd Gen S&W.

I'm not sure that I would characterize anything that happens on any reality showed as being presented as normal.

Star Trek. Roddenberry pitched it as Wagon Train to the Stars. They were explicitly not military. If phasers don't count, the crew were perfectly at home with conventional 19th and 20th century guns (Spectre of the Gun with O.K. Corral kit; Sulu in Shore Leave with a WWII era revolver; A Piece of the Action with mobster "heaters" and "Tommy guns"). The crew used them as tools when the occasion called for it.

How about Top Shot on History Channel?

Top Shot had a thread dedicated to it in the last year or so. Personally, I enjoy the show, but it seems to have a significant amount of exaggerated/forced drama. I wouldn't call it normal.

Yes, that was the King of the Hill with a father-son shooting match.

I recall the gun heavy episode too where Peggy turns a book store into a "gun shop"(she does not get a FFL  ).

Top Shot, Sons Of Guns, American Guns, Guntucky, etc don't count to me because they are based in the shooting sports industry or guns. It's not a hobby or lifestyle issue like the fictional shows.

PS; it's quick, but Boomhauer is identified as a Texas Ranger :D in the final KOTH. He puts his wallet on the dresser & his Ranger badge/Texas Public Safety ID is shown. It's strange that it's never mentioned earlier & Boomhauer never carrys or has any guns.

I once saw an episode of the 60's Dick Van Dyke show that had a scene that took place in his basement. As far as I know it's the only time the basement was ever shown. This was Dick's den, signified by two rifles hanging on the wall. They were never mentioned in any way, they just showed that this was Dick's room.

Of course this was back when hunting made you a Sportsman, not grounds for immediately getting fired and the Boy Scouts were considered a fine organization, not a homophobic paramilitary group.

How about almost any cop show?

24, criminal minds, cagney and lacey, magnum PI?, or the one about the swat team (cant remember the name but it has that bald guy, two actually)

Sulu specifically states that he is gun collector in the Star Trek episode "Shore Leave."

Gosh, I think this is the most long dead-thread resurrection I've ever participated in...
There is a TV advertisement for ,I think, COIT where you can see a couple old rifles displayed on a wall in the background. Only lasts an instant, but they are there.

In the good old days - I Love Lucy had shotguns around for hunting. Leave it to Beaver was similar. Lucy had some funny episode about a handgun but I can't remember the details.

In modern times, the Food and Travel Channels have very gun friendly food shows. Anthony Zimmern, Alton Brown, Ming Tsai and Anthony Bourdain have had gun centric experiences and shows. Even a cheese show on AWE had a nice hunting experience with a silenced rifle in the UK.

Brown.....

Brown owns & shoots ARs. :D
I saw a media article where he took a tricked out M16/AR15 type rifle with a huge scope to a long range complex. He's a fairly good shot too. :D

A few years ago, I saw a network "unscripted" series where a Las Vegas resort chef would go target shooting with a Glock pistol(his own) to reduce stress. It showed that most gun owners are stable, responsible people who shoot firearms as a hobby or for recreation.

He was portrayed in another episode with an SP101 and a reloading press, which he used for testing.

Cops & military .....

Not to nit-pick or be "that guy" :D , but for cops or military/spec ops to have guns or weapons isn't really showing "regular firearm ownership" like a hobby or as a normal lifestyle issue.
Many cops both in real life & TV/movies carry guns only by SOP or mandate. They aren't a sporting, hobby or lifestyle(defense/home security) issue.

Any service member on active duty in the last 30 years can tell you too that guns or carrying/owning private firearms is highly restricted or discouraged by 80-90% of commanders & senior NCOs.
