What Percentage Of Those Licenced To Carry Actually Do Carry Regularly?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but police officers don't 'offensively assault a bad guy'. They do, however, justifiably use their firearms defensively when the following three factors are present: Ability (the ability of the suspect to cause death or grievous bodily injury), Opportunity (the suspect is able to carry out death or grievous bodily injury), Jeopardy (the officer reasonably believed his life was in imminent danger). And by the way, pockets are meant to keep you keys and comb in, not your firearm, holstered or not.
Burst my bubble???? Cops are called to a crime scene, to offensively attack and take down law breakers. their weapons are drawn before they reach the law breakers, they are not surprised and have to draw unless they are ambushed which happens but rarely.. They are offensive combatants with the law on their side, and carry their weapons to the crime scene, they rarely have to quick draw their weapon, like someone who has to defend themself from a personal attack.. very few cops are attacked by a surprise assault, they are called to a crime scene already aware of a crime in play... they offensively go after the criminals, not wait for the criminals to come to them.
SWAT uses offensive weapon and tactics to go after criminals ( an assault ) an offensive action )... and offensively gain fire superiority, a term used in the military every day... Burst my bubble indeed. until you have walked a mile in my shoes both professionally and as a civilian you couldn't burst my bubble with a shot gun.

I attended my concealed carry class today and the instructor threw out the following statistics:
  • 19% of the population has a concealed carry permit
  • 3% carry on a regular basis.
I have no idea where he got those numbers from.

I have absolutely no intention of actually carrying a gun. Why am I getting a permit?
  • It makes transporting a gun to and from the range much simpler
  • It makes having a gun in my campervan much simpler
  • I shoot on public land and don't have to worry about whether a long shirt or jacket covers my holstered gun.
Here are some stats I know, in Pa there are 900,000 licensed to carry permits issued, there is an undetermined amount of people who open carry in Pa. IN my gun club of 5,000 members 4200 hundred have a license to carry, Of the hundreds of member I have know over the last 35 years, I don't know one single person that has a permit to carry that doesnt not carry every day. I shoot in an oldtimers league people over 60, I don't know a single shooter in that league who doesn't have a license to carry or who doesn't carry every day.

Uh, yeah, that "19%" is way, way, optimistic ...

Don't know how well you really know these "hundreds" of members, but your assertion seems contrary to almost every single post in this thread. And being a long-time gun guy in the original shall-issue state, I can't believe what you're saying -- that ALL of these folks carry every single day. Sorry, but no. There's too much evidence to the contrary, that there simply aren't that many licensed folks who actually do carry on a regular basis. One can also easily draw that conclusion by the relative success demonstrated by criminals on a daily basis, and the paucity of statistics noting concealed-carriers who intervene in/stop crimes by using their concealed handguns.

My thought as well. However, I have no idea where the numbers came from or if he was talking national, state, city, etc.

Florida has the largest in raw numbers but that is still only 1.38M out of 19.89m or 7% and they issue permits to non-residents.

Regardless, I paid my money and got the certificate. That was the only value of the class. From watching other people it looks like we will have a half dozen or so people that don't know how to even load and fire a semiauto licensed to carry in the majority of US states. Hopefully they leave the guns at home until they take at least a basic gun safety class.

Its a Gun Club, 5000 active member, 90 % are NRA members and 25 % are life members including myself.. WE are gun people, exercising our rights. It very low road for anyone to call someone liar. I live in a very gun friendly State. When I go hunting Up State Pa. Open carry is extremely common. Most men will carry openly, and most women carry in their purse...there is little to no crime in Potter county Pike county, or Center county. At our club, the topic of conversation in our restaurant and club house is always about gun laws, Obama, the Democrats, and our right to carry. My world is obviously worlds apart from your world. All my friends live and breath gun rights. I live in the Suburbs of a very large city where gun on gun crime occurs 20 times a day. Similar crimes occur inPhiladelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Chester, Camden, Newark, everyday. those crimes bleed over into the suburbs. One of the reason I have been assaulted twice in 35 years.( hardly an national average. Most people go through life without ever having the need to draw their weapon. My experiences is not typical of the nation wide demographic. Many members of my club have had to defend themself in their lifetime, that why our community of gun advocates is so large... there aren't too many gun clubs out their with 5000 active members. Last week alone we had 32 people sign up to be vetted, background checked and sign up for our orientation to become a member, we turn away about 2 % of those wanting to join. Our club is 300 dollars a year for a full privilege family membership. 200 dollars for a single membership, and 70 for seniors. WE have over 25 members with a gold card. ( over 50 years of continuous membership. Free membership. Our club is extremely strict. Ranges are very tight with safety oversight. In 77 years we have never had a single accident that required hospitalization. No one has ever been shot. WE have however had several weapon malfunctions causing injuries. I wont throw any insult back at you, but if you think that you are in someway, immune from a personal assault, you are living in fantasy land. I Have the right to carry, and I do, why? because my family need me. I've already been involved in a car jacking, and a robbery. But then I have been carrying for 50 years. I'm not some 21 year old, with the idea that carrying a weapon somehow makes them cool.
I carry everyday because I watch the news everyday. IM not blind to the very unsafe state of safety in this country, or the level of terroristic threats, that grow every day. No I am not a prepper, no IM not paranoid, and Yes IM very comfortable knowing I have a chance. Ill never be a helpless unarmed victim, or be delusional enough to think I'm immune. All the people at my club feel the same way. 75% of the people in my State do not know anything about gun laws, most don't know they live in an open carry State. You continue to think you are immune, and Ill exercise my right to carry, but I wont call you names.

I don't know how anyone who has a license to carry, who can predict when they will be mugged. So if you consider having the right to carry and choose not too, its on you...Most people will never need to draw a weapon in personal defense, but Ill carry everyday for my families sake, and not risk making a bad choice on any given day not to carry that day.
I like the fact that is there, but hardly know its there even though its a 45 ACP.. I've come into the house and forgot its there and carry it in the house even though I don't have too.
The worst case would be needing a weapon and not having it on that particular day even though you have a license to carry. I can guarantee you this, if one of your friends survives a mugging, he will never leave his weapon home again.. most people don't get a second chance to defend themself. especially if they are unarmed.

I primarily got my CHL for easier legal transport of a handgun. I also live in a small town in which I have never once heard of a mugging within 40 miles of here. Its not Mayberry but its pretty darn close.

I carry 95% of the time. WA State CPL and nearby Idaho honors
WA state CPLs. I'm in SE Washington State.
WA State is a "Will Issue" meaning if you
pass the Background CHeck, they will issue the Concealed Pistol
License ( CPL ). No Training, or range test required. So, if I find
out someone has a CPL, I wonder about their knowledge/training &
ability.

Open Carried on the family farm in my teens in the mid/late '60s

People have asked me why I carry ( concealed ) in church... A Catholic Church full of parishioners on a Sunday Morning is a prime target for a radical Islamic attack. The real simple answer is
" Why Not "?

My small town is peaceful as well but my purse always has a sharp knife, an adjustable wrench, a small roll of duct tape and a 38 Super. But then so does half the population... Which could explain why my small town is so peaceful.

20 times a day? What city is this? In the U.S.? And why aren't we reading about this in the news?

Also, when one uses the phrase "gun crime," one has just bought into the arguments of the antis. It's crime; the fact that a firearm may have been used doesn't make it special.

Not to be overly argumentative, but how many Catholic churches have been targeted by islamic extremists in Pennsylvania, let alone the other 49 states in the Union?

It might be a target rich environment, but it's still one they have not taken any advantage of on US soil.

Having said that, I do occasionally go to church (Catholic) with my mother, and I carry there. But then again, I carry everywhere.
