A lot of you shoot RMR bullets. RMR recommends that their 124 grain 9mm RMR (JHP) be driven to 1150 fps for reliable expansion. What powders are y'all using to get that velocity from a semiauto with a 4-inch barrel? Can you do so without going into +P pressures?

124 grain 9mm RMR ... MPR ... be driven to 1150 fps for reliable expansion.
BE-86 for me - https://reloadingdata.speer.com/downloads/speer/reloading-pdfs/handgun/9mm_Luger__124_rev1.pdf
  • 9mm 124 gr Speer GDHP BE-86 COL 1.120" Start 5.4 gr (1124 fps) - Max 6.0 gr (1199 fps)

Note that MPR has more of a cut off RN profile that gets seated to shorter OAL so I would conduct chrono testing with start charge of 5.4 gr. If using shorter OAL than 1.100", I would consider reduction of start charge and test 5.1 gr.

Unlike previous JHP which had similar profile to Gold Dot HP, MPR has longer bullet base that gets seated deeper.

There are different max/working OAL for RMR MPR depending on the leade length of barrels - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...col-for-reference.848462/page-2#post-11465109
  • Beretta 92FS - 1.125"
  • Browning Hi Power - 1.125"
  • Canik TP9SFX - 1.090"/1.070"
  • Glock 22/KKM conversion barrel - 1.115"
  • Glock 22/Tactical Kinetics conversion - 1.055"
  • Glock 23/Lone Wolf conversion - 1.040"
  • HK VP9 - 1.080"
  • M&P Shield - 1.105"
  • M&P Shield EZ - 1.040"
  • Sig P226 Legion - 1.150"
  • Sig P320 X5 - 1.100"
  • Sig P320/Barsto barrel - 1.030"
  • Sig P938 - 1.060"

Thanks. I built some dummy rounds to plunk test my G48 and found 1.064" will clear; that works in my Kahr P9 as well, which has a longer leade.

Anybody using Longshot? LoadData.com shows 1263 fps with 6.0 grains under a 124 gr Speer Gold Dot HP. Original source was Handloader #282, Feb/Mar 2013. Would definitely back off, probably all the way to 5.0 to work up. I also have Sport Pistol, Titegroup, Unique, and Green Dot on hand, but they don't look like they'll get there at standard pressure.

This load is safe in my guns, please work up your own loads, etc.

BE-86 will get you there. I load 5.6 grains to an OAL of 1.07. I get an average of 1150fps from my 4" SR9e. I'll admit it feels a little on the warm side in the handgun. I shoot this load mostly from a carbine.

I think Longshot will get you there. Hodg data is pushing a 124 XTP, which is another short COL bullet North of 1200 from a 4" test barrel

I'll give Longshot a try since I have a pound of it on hand. I'll keep my eye open for some BE-86, and maybe some Power Pistol.

5.8gr of Unique with the 124gr RMR MPR with a 1.120 o.a.l. gives me 1148fps out of my Taurus PT111 G2. Shot into water jugs, they Screenshot_20220324-211914_Gallery.jpg Screenshot_20220324-212504_Gallery.jpg gave me excellent expansion. I did lose the jackets on both bullets, so they both weighed in at 102.4gr. They expanded to .610 and .640 inches however.

The 2 bullets on the right are 115gr Hornady XTP's for expansion comparison.

These are +P loads.

I’m loading them with 5.2 grains of BE-86, but I load for accuracy and not speed. My thoughts are a well placed bullet won’t have to rely so much on expanding or not. May or may not work for others.

I second the Silhouette RX.

Clean, well metering powder.

I can’t say anything bad about BE-86 or Longshot, never used them.

But I loaded and shot a few thousand rounds (124 gr bullets) with HS6. Velocity and accuracy were OK. But flashy after dark and sooty. But I primarily got off of HS6 because it’s my favorite 12 ga 1 1/4 is powder and I was down to 4 lbs.

Still waiting to test LS in 9mm and .38, but I switched away from HS-6 in heavy shotgun several years ago. I suspect I'll like it as well as H6 there also. LS just does everything a little better in heavy 12ga with more versatility. I don't shoot a lot of 1 1/2 oz coyote killers, but it works there. Also works for lightning quick 1 1/8 oz pheasant swatters. Makes soft lead 6's I make in my Littleton hit like a heavy charge of 5s used to! And of course it loads the classic 1330-1 1/4 load or runs it a bit faster if you choose.

I haven't been able to get my hands on AA9, Be-86 Longshot, or Sillouet. As soon as I do I'm going to try those. I do use Tite Group, Hs-6, and CFE-P In 9mm. HS-6 is not as touchy near max as Tite Group, but Tite Group uses a lot less powder for the same ve, so it becomes a matter of what's most important to you; flash, recoil, rds/lb, max ve, metering, etc.
I also like 231 in my 10mm because its not as snappy on recoil, but haven't tried it in 9mm yet.

It’s tough to do without going into +p pressures from a 4” barrel. True Blue is another powder to keep your eye out for that seems tolerant of pushing.
