What powder is this?

Bought some H414 and magnum primers and gave that a try...

I'm pretty sure that Remington powder is either H414 or W760 or something very close to it. I am getting the same velocity with 414 and magnum primers (recommended for that powder) as I did the Remington 140 grain loads.

Question answered. ;)

I went through the same thing when I first started hand loading about 15 years ago. I have a Tikka in 25-06 that will just shoot the lights out with winchester 90 grain hollow points factory load so I bought a case of it. After shooting through that I tried to get some more but found it had gone from $14 a box to $25 so I got in to hand loading trying to duplicate that load. After some searching I found that the bullet was a speer 87 grain hollow point with the tip flattened slightly so I bought a bunch of those. I didn't pay any attention to what the factory powder was but I just tried some of the powders listed in the books that noted good accuracy. I tried RL19, IMR4350, and one other with decent results, just not up to how that factory load shot. Then I tried H4831 SC and a win LR primer and 57 grains gave me the exact same velocity and even better accuracy than the factory load and I said yay, I found it! Latter I pulled a bullet and the factory load had like 51 grains of ball powder in it. I suspect it was H414/W760 but I will never know because the H4831sc shoots too damn well to change!

"pretty sure" is not good enough. Who knows, possibly Remington bought up a huge lot of ball powder from some country in eastern Europe. My suggestions would be to use a chronograph and known powder most likely one of the 4350's.
