What pump shotgun are you buying if Mossberg and Remington (Rem Arms) are not an option?

Howdy Again

I took a few photos of my 'new' (1964) Model 12 this week. 12 gauge, Full Choke, Pigeon Grade. The butt plate, and adjustable comb were added sometime after it left the factory.

I have only been shooting it for a few weeks now, trying to get used to it, it swings a little bit different than the one I posted earlier. Only two more weeks until Trap League starts, so I have my work cut out for me.

Browning BPS is appealing to me, I can't justify having 10 different pump shotguns but aside from my 500, 590 and 870 a BPS is not out of the question. Also, the Benelli Nova is said to be a rugged shotgun, flaw or two aside.... Basically any Benelli really.....

Ithaca 37 and Win M12 are on my list of wants too but for a current production probably a Nova or a BPS

I have a Mossberg 500 and a 870. I think I gave the 870 away and the 500 is a slug gun. I only shoot semi-autos and O/U these days. If I wanted another I would probably buy an old Wingmaster but in new I would look at a Nova or BPS. Or maybe one of those cheap Turkish guns in 20 gauge. I have a DU Charlies Daly SA that is made in Turkey and never had any trouble with it. I have trudged though many frozen cattail sloughs and tripped in the snow and ice more than once with it. Or maybe a few dozen times, lol.

You're doing yourself a disservice by effectively eliminating the best 2 working pump shotguns on the market, but if I were unable to get either of those I'd probably get an Ithaca 37 for function (though if mine ever jammed that little "one whole for everything" would feel claustrophobic trying to work on fixing it). I also recently picked up a Stoeger P3000 which seems nice (I basically got it rather than the Nova which its similar to because the Stoeger was available in walnut whilst the Nova/Supernova was not).

I wouldn’t even really seriously consider a Mossberg or a Remington if I could only have one shotgun so I would definitely recommend the Bonelli nova or supernova and the supernova is definitely worth the extra money and it’s still not that expensive considering what you get for your money I have one that I have three different barrels for and I have killed almost every description of critter with it

Good lord, but that thing is spectacular!

Ithaca 37, I've used one of these for years. Great gun to walk the stubble fields with chasing pheasants.

Ithaca 37 - New ones are pricey, but that is a lighter pump gun option.

Ithacas are hard to come by. They closed up shop at the start of the lockdowns in Spring of 2020, and, at least to my knowledge, they haven't ramped up again yet. Last I checked, they were out of stock pretty much everywhere.

But this is true of shotguns in general. I've been wanting an Ithaca 37 Defense Gun for a several years. I can't even find an American Taurus (Mossberg 88) on a shelf. I can find a few of the high end, duck guns, but that's about all.

If I wanted a NEW pump shotgun that would be used for turkey, duck & goose it would be the Winchester SXP. I picked one up years back on a friend’s recommendation for my sons birthday. The gun has worked flawlessly with little maintenance and has been used a lot every hunting season. The price on these gun is at a point you don’t mind getting them dirty.

as a lefty I have used and owned 4 Ithaca 37's over the years, 2 12 ga, 1 20 ga and currently , at age 75, I still own my uncles 1957 16 ga...enjoyed every one of them but the 16 is my favorite

As others said, the Browning BPS, Benelli Nova, and Ithaca 37 are very good choices. If you don't like the mossbergs I doubt you'd like the Winchester SXP shotguns, as the mossbergs seem to have a higher standard of quality and better customer service than Winchester on top of actually being made in the US and not China like the Winchester shotguns. One shotgun I haven't seen mentioned yet is the CZ 612 pump action shotgun. They retail at about $450 for a standard field model with walnut furniture. I haven't personally fired one but they seem to be very well made.
Have a Churchill 612 self defense gun( same as CZ), seems to be very reliable, can’t tell much diff from several 870’s that I have owned- I think the Turkish shotguns are well made, and a lot less expensive. 535C92B9-C40A-4673-808C-5C0E3C60FA93.jpeg

If it ain’t an 870, I ain’t buying. Personal opinion of course. Spoke with S***** who works at the arms this week. Says the 870 line is doing well. He works on making 870's. If Remington didn’t exist, I would find an 870 clone of some type.

Very nice pigeon grade mod 12. That was the king of the trap range for many years.

I would (and have) also choose a model 12.
The take-down is superior to all others.

Yeah I might have been a bit harsh. But my limited experience with Mossberg has not been good, though that is all second hand and borrowed guns I have never owned a Mossberg. I once saw the plastic fire control housing fall out of the bottom of a shooters Mossberg while shooting a round of five-stand.

But it was mostly a mental exercise, trying to figure out what other option are still on the market other than Mossberg, Remington and my BPS.

I have been using Mossberg pump shotguns since the early 80's for all my waterfowl, upland game, small game, and turkey hunting. I also depended on them with my life in combat while in the Army. My 410 Mossberg 500 has been my go to shotgun for all small game and upland game since I was a kid. I also use to use it to shoot skeet. It's hard to tell how many shells it has had shot through it in the last 38 years and it is still going strong. Whil in the Army we used the Mossberg 590 along with the NFA version of the Shockwave. Both held up just fine in combat and always worked.

Mossberg is definitely NOT the Taurus of the shotgun world.

And I wouldn't dismiss a pre REMLIN 870 either. They have been proven to be just as reliable as the Mossberg 500. When choosing between the two, it really comes down to the different features and which you prefer more.

I would trade a limb for one of them, I feel with a gun like that, you'd have to be very lucky to find one, no?

Not lucky, just a matter of knowing where to find them

:evil::evil:
They're out there.
There are pages of them on gunbroker. I have started watching a couple myself....

That's one place. Guns International is another, there are almost always a few on there.

I still have hopes to find a Remington 870 Wingmaster
You can find them pretty easily on gunbroker and other similar online sites but they seem to fetch upwards of $1K and up +, I know I've been keeping an eye out for one. If you're serious about finding g one they can be found in shops from time to time for closer to $500-$600. I have seen a couple here and there but I'm looking for another TB or TC, of which there are even fewer and would require a bit of luck. Can't pay what they're going for online....I'll wait.

I just sold a couple wingmasters because of the crazy money their bringing. Both in great condition. Then I picked a average condition older one for $175 less barrel and will add one of my extra barrels I have laying around. Kinda a project gun.

I'd like to find the same kind of deal, wouldn't even need to be a wingmaster per se, even an old 870 reciever would do. If rem arms winds up maintaining a downward trajectory, I doubt those particular guns (wingmasters) will ever go back down in price.

I've said it here before but one of my biggest gun related regrets was selling a 100% mint wingmaster for $200. I had it a couple years and never shot it, sold it for what I paid, $200. That was dumb. Didn't know what I had.

Ithaca 37. Had one in 12 gauge but liked the top tang safety of the Mossberg so went that direction when I found a 16 ga model.
I changed to left handed shooting of long guns and have used a 16 ga. Mossberg 500b for several years now as an all arounder.
