I have an encore with a 10" bullberry barrel in 22 k-hornet. I'm going to use it for varmint hunting this coming off season.

I just don't know what power of scope to get for it. I'm an excellent shot with a pistol. And the barrel is very capable of some good shooting. I'm tempted to put a rifle scope on it like Xphunter does with his hunting rigs...However, if I'm going to use a low power scope anyhow, I might as well stick with a pistol scope, most of my shooting will be from a "bench" or well supported area.

Right now, I have an old Tasco 10-40x50 on it, lol. Overkill? A bit!

So like to find something that's a little better suited for it.

Thanks guys.

It IS a pistol. Is 8x enough or too much? I have no experience with the hornet or this variant. I bought the barrel years ago and fireformed some brass for it, but never did much else with it.

I'm probably going to use it for close distance coyote killing, target work, and the occasional long distance rabbit.

Well that scope is a variable PISTOL scope and about the best of that kind. *x pistol scopes are alot! I have a fixed 4x o my Hornet Exemplar, but sometimes wish it had a little more. You can hit squirells to 150 yards with a 4x pistol scope. I have that nikon scope on a .223 super 14 barrel and it is good to 300 yards.

I have a 6X18 on my regular Hornet. I like high magnification, some folks don't. With the variable, it is very versatile as far as your shooting distance goes, and if the mirage is out, you can dial it down as well.

What's the realistic effective range for this cal? That's probably the better question to ask. I've read up to 250 yards...but for something the size of a coyote..and in a pistol length(I assume that hurts velocity a lot), what ranges can I expect it to still be deadly?

I wouldnt shoot a coyote past 150 yards with a K hornet . In a 10 inch barrel make that 100 yards. I don't like to inflict pain and suffering.
