What things do you do for shooting money?

CC_IA - any side effects? I could probably get over the needle (don't mind medical shots, tattoo needles, etc. - but needles+veins gives me pause), but I'm worried about energy and recovery.

I used to do the donate blood/sell plasma thing. However a couple of years back they banned anyone who had lived in Europe in the late '80's early '90's for more the 3-6(?) months from donating blood/selling plasma. Something to do with potential Mad Cow Disease/CJD, IIRC........ :uhoh:

So now, I don't eat lunch out (unless one of my vendors is buying). I recycle hulls, wads, clay pigeons, but I'm down to my last 50lbs of the $12.00/bag shot from the 800lbs that I bought roughly 3 years ago. I'd shoot reclaimed shot if I could find a place in/around the Chicago area that has some. I'm trying to organize a group buy at my club, but no-one is interested. I also sell hulls and other miscellaneous gun stuff here and there.

And like oldfart, About once a quarter I kiss Mrs. Scout's butt to buy primers and a jug or two of powder, after showing her what I've deposited into the checking account from my "sales".

can't believe only one person mentioned this: selling plasma. Seriously, this is really good money for a small time commitment. Two visits a week, $50-60 --> $200-260 a month!
How did you go about finding a place that pays for plasma? I can't find anything in our yellow pages, and I'm just a little shy to call up an "altrusitic" donation place and ask for a recommendation for a place that pays donors.

Wooderson - There are a few side effects, mostly after the first initial "donation." You tend to feel a bit woozy if you haven't had a good meal beforehand and haven't been drinking enough fluids during the day. I find that I get more tired after the visit, so if you have an extremely hectic job/lifestyle, this might not be for you. There is also a small chance of a hematoma (blowing the vein and blood leaks out into the surrounding tissue), which is annoying and effects movement --> this is rare, though.

A more outward side effect is that the puncture marks on the inside of your elbow make you look like a heroin addict, which during the winter months is fine (sweatshirts, coats cover it).

Tradja - I'm not sure there are any places in Oregon (I use Biolife Plasma Services). You can try the internet, but I didn't find any places out further west. during the search.

My wife complains every time the tall trashcan I keep in the utility room for aluminum cans is full. She thinks its silly to save them. I crush them and pack them into large trash bags that get stacked in the crawl space. Neighbors give me theirs too because they don't take the time to take them in but like the fact that I am "enviromentally responsible". I scrap them about every 6 months. Just went two weeks ago and had about 135 lbs of aluminum at 66 cents per pound. $90 in hand I went to Wal*Mart and bought 5 boxes of WWB 9mm & stopped at the good Mexican joint on the corner and brought home dinner for the family.
I am known to my family and anyone living near me as the junk collector, they give me old swing sets, lawn mowers, appliances, car parts, whole cars, whatever they have, I haul it all away.

It all goes into the guns 'n ammo war chest.

Now that gas is under $3 a gallon the war chest is actually keeping up with demand.

A guy I know does this. He says it pays for his YUKON.

He asked if I like to go at least once a week. For $20 and about 1 hour of my time pnce a week, or if I can go twice a week it would be $50.00. hummmm ammo money.

Oh, also sell junk I don't need onto ebay ;)

That plasma bit sounds good to me. $200 a month could get me a Five-Seven just before summer hits. Or a Webley. Or a big pile of empty brass.

I live in a university town, so there are three places that openly advertise plasma 'donations' near campus.

I think they generally advertise themselves as blood centers (no different from non-profits) so you may just want to call one of them that looks more like a commercial setup.

Nahhhh... reminds me of that "Married with Children" episode where Al Bundy sells blood to cover a bet on Kelly's pool playing....

I preferred thinning out the local farmers' prairie rat infestations with my .223 (post #20, page 1).

Looking for new ideas....

Tried selling my body, but it seems the market for 50+ year old, bald gigolos with a beer gut, and bad knees is pretty much saturated:what:

I do virus-cleaning, data-recovery and secure data-wiping on hard-drives pretty darned cheap; I stopped killing people for money at least a year ago ;)

Bulldog

Five years ago when I finally got my x-wife Bulldog paid off in alimony I joined the "Gun of the month" club. Two of the smartest decisions I ever made.

I donate plasma too. 1.5 hours per session twice a week = $60 cash. Plus they sometimes pay bonuses for coming in 6 or more times a month, etc.

Google "Bio-Life Plasma" for more info.

I make more per hour laying on a bed reading a book with a needle in my arm than I do at my real job... :scrutiny:

I've been donating for over a year now. My plasma money has paid for my 20-gun safe, a 91/30 & K-31, a couple thousand rounds of ammo, plus an assortment of shooting paraphernalia, and I've still got extra $$$ squirrelled away for future purchases. :D

Plus I get bonus points from the wife who appreciates that I'm not raiding the grocery money to buy "food" for my guns...
