What to do in SF in July?

I have a free trip to San Francisco in July. I've not been there before so I'm looking for tips as to what I can do to address my missed range time back here at home.
Are there any good ranges (that rent) that anyone can recommend?

Also, I know there are certain restrictions out there, can I carry a folding knife of any size or are they restricted to a limited blade length?

Jackson Arms in South City. I believe their new address is

South San Francisco, CA

This is about 10-15 mins south of SF on the 101 freeway.

They just moved (or are currently moving). They do have a strict policy of no rental if you are alone, unless you have a fully functioning firearm with you. Also, at the old range, they allowed handguns up to 44mag, but no 454 or 50 stuff.

On the knife thing, I'm not sure. I carry a four in folder all the time (including in my suit pocket). Hopefully someone else has someknowledge.

I thought those nutcases had banned all types of ammunition and handguns in SF?
 
Don't expect "July" temperatures that you are use to in Tenn.! I made my first trip there in the fall, and there are some areas worth seeing. Take the city tour on the "trolly buses" Well worth the dime or two. If you're into wine, do the Napa Valley tour @ $100.00. Don't waste your time at guns shops and ranges, you can do that anywhere. Just enjoy the town, and discover why WE need to win back the rights of everyone in the US, not just worry about our own states. Oh, don't waste your time renting a car, just use pub. transportation. It will cost you $25-$50 a day just to park the car.
As far as the knife goes, good luck. I went totally unarmed and felt naked.
Oh, take some spare change for the "street bum acts" They can get pretty entertaining!

I'm suffering brainlock - what is the purpose of this policy?

San Francisco is pretty nice, once you get past the endemic craziness. If not for the political situation and the flat out insane living expenses, I'd probably move there; the weather is about as close to perfect as I've ever seen! At least for me, I like the cooler weather; going from Virginia in August to SF was like going from hell to heaven.

Some ranges do this because of suicides. They figure if your with someone else or have a firearm already, it's a moot point. Personally I think it's only CYA, much to do about nothing.

BTW - Jackson arms I believe is South SF\Daly City. Is not in the same jurisdiction as SF city proper.

There is another indoor\rental range in Marin just north of the GoldenGate bridge. I believe they are easier on policy and a decent place. I found it as Bullseye via Google.

Both are correct. There have been a few suicides around the country at ranges and, CA being the litigious state that it is, has effectively forced range owners to adopt draconian CYA policies.

As far as the boundaries of Nut Job, USA, they end just north of Daly City I believe. South San Francisco is in San Mateo County, not SF.

For things other than shooting:
1. Alcatraz (touristy, but interesting and fun)
2. De Young (if you like museums)
3. Coit Tower (great views)
4. Fisherman's Wharf (a must see)
5. Union Square (shopping and eating)
6. Exploratorium (if you have kids with you)
7. Cable cars (trolleys are powered overhead, cable cars underground)
8. Ghirardelli Square (food, drink and chocolate)

Interesting, I suppose that makes sense after a fashion. Certainly if that's happened to a given business before, I can see the logic, CYA or not.

If I ever get back to SF, I'll have to have a go at these ranges - I didn't even bother looking, considering the area.
 
The guys at Jackson are pretty tough on the rules by the way. If you break them, they will ask you to leave.

Being the last indoor gun range in SF, they have to worry about getting sued like crazy. The previous owner told me that the insurance there was astronomical.

But as a frequent shooter at Jackson, after a while they guys know you and know you're not going to shoot up their ceilings or go mall ninja on them. They will pretty much let you do whatever you want.

I rapid fire from my carbine and draw from my CCW holster all the time there. Not a problem.

Oh, Jackson now will be allowing rifles up to 308. This is the first indoor range in CA that I know of that will do this.
 
Fun

If you like ships, there is a neat maritime museum that sells a multi day ticket.
If you like cool older sports cars, the Blackhawk Grille in Walnut Creek (over GG bridge) is a nice restaurant attached to a car show room.

Thanks all, well I guess after reading that guide to California's knife laws I will take a lesser knife with me so I don't get one of my favorites confiscated in error. Probably a CRKT M16 Zytel.
And I should be fine in the SF cool weather. I did spend the first 30+ years of this life in England after all.
Not sure I fancy the range after reading the above, not if the guy in the line next to me is going to be shooting himself!! j/k.

If it was me, Id drive north to Ft Bragg, rent a mask, snorkel, fins, wet suit, weight belt, and pry bar and go abalone diving.
San Fransico is a pit.:barf:
 
Bwana, that's your choice, I however have a free vacation with a 4 star hotel while my wife is on business. So I think I should at least see what the city has to offer.

Hey, that's the same reason I got to go too! We stayed two blocks from Fishermans Wharf. It's about $15 per person from the airport to the wharf area. Gotta warn you about those SanFan 4 star hotels though. My room was on a busy street corner, and this country boy 'aint use to horns honkin' and loud exhaust systems all night long.
Check out Scomas on the Wharf, kind of down a few blocks from the main area and behind some buildings on the water. Bit pricy, but great food. Oh, and don't forget a good camera with plenty of film or memory. Man, I wish I had some of that Boudine Sour Dough bread righ now! You'll get your chance at trying it ( I recommend a bowl of clam chowder in the bread bowl setting out on the wharf.) But watch out for the homeless, they sleep everywhere, and if you are an early riser as I was that weekend, you might step on a few if you're not careful :what: I was on the wharf taking photos and backing up for a better shot, thinking I was all alone, I backed up and stepped on some dude snoring. He never even budged. Just kept on snoring.....
 
Weather permitting, take a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Afterward, tour old Fort Point beneath the bridge on the San Francisco side. I'll help you work up an appetite for dinner at the Cliff House...
 
Not sure what the Cliff House is but I should add I'm vegetarian Buddhist.
Yeah, I know... a Buddhist that shoots.
We're staying at the Argonaut. Sounds like I should be looking for the Golden Fleece.
I guess I'll go for a swim out to Alcatraz or something to liven the trip up.
 
I'm sure the Cliff House accommodates vegetarians.

It's a restaurant at the far west end of the city. There is a park to the north where you have a fantastic view of the Golden Gate bridge and from where Ansel Adams took his famous pictures of it being built.

From the restaurant, you have a unique view of the sunset over the Pacific while watching the sea lions play on the two tiny islands below the cliff.

If nothing else, stop in for a walk and a beverage that fits your lifestyle.
