What to get next

I am undecided I am getting the itch for another gun. I am on the fence between the Sig 220EL, Beretta Steel92 1, S&W Recon 45 or buying a 10MM. I would get the 10MM but an concerned about the cost of ammo. Will this round make a comeback?

Check 10mm Talk for cheap practice ammo sources or use it as an excuse to start reloading. Great cartridge, very versatile and a wide range of ammo available for it.

Odds are Double Tap will have an ammo to fit your needs from 135 gr to 230 gr.

Are you more interested in the firearm or the calibre? The 10mm is not likely to make a come back. It got killed by the .40S&W, just like the .41AE. However, if the firearm is more important, track down a Colt Delta Elite in 10mm. It's really just a Government Model in 10mm, but with heavier recoil. Not unmanageable or painful felt recoil, just more. Think really hot .45's. Norma is the only game for loaded ammo, I think. Reloading makes a lot of ammo headaches go away.
In any case, the calibre really doesn't matter. Not to me anyway. I'm far more interested in owning,or at least, shooting as many different firearms as possible.

AFAIK, Norma isn't producing any 10mm ammo and hasn't for years. In fact, I don't believe they are producing any pistol ammo currently. At least none that I can find for sale. If you are referring to their current line of rifle cartridges I'm not sure how that worked into this thread.

Olin/Winchester, Federal and Remington all produce 10mm ammunition but normally of the "premium" variety that's not particularly affordable for regular shooting. Double Tap, Buffalo Bore, and other specialty ammo manufactures are also producing for the 10mm and have been adding new loads to their line-ups.

There are more models and brands of guns chambered in 10mm now than ever before. It's not an extremely popular cartridge but it does have enough fans for S&W to reintroduce the 610 revolver, for Tanfoglio, Glock, Kimber, Dan Wesson, et al to be producing new firearms and older examples of 10mm are going up in value as demand is increasing. The Colt Delta Elite and varients in particular are seeing rising prices.

10mmtalk is a new board and pretty darn active considering it's deticated to a single pistol cartridge. 319 members so far and it's only been up for 3 weeks.

I don't think it's dieing out quite yet.

Wolfy, while not on your list take a long look at the new
Para single stack, single-action 1911 SSP. This thing is a bute,
with all the enhancements in stainless, on a Regal* blued
frame and slide. It has the new Para power extractor which is
suppose to offer 50% more effectiveness in the runing of the
weapon. Also, the double-diamond (checkered) cocobolo wood
grips add to the distinction (and beauty) of this weapon. The
weapon retails at an introductory price of $749**; but my dealer
has 'em for $599 OTD. Just might be worth taking a look at?

Dan thanks for the tip it is a nice looking pistol but I already have a Kimber CDP II and am looking for something different.

To all thank you for your help I am leaning towards the 220 because it is DA and 45ACP.

I've been thinking about a used delta or a Glock 29 lately. The 10mm is a great round but its never going any further than the 41 mag. Consequently, the ammo is always going to be a little high priced and somewhat of a pain in the ass to find.

The truth is that the 40 S&W(180gr @ 1000-1100 fps) was what the original 41 mag was supposed to be when it was dreamed about. Consequently, it is no surprise this round works well and is very popular. The 10mm turned out to be about 180 @ 1200-1300 fps similar to the first 41 mag police load which turned out to be a little too much for most police officers (and the weight of the N frame didn't make the cops happy either).

The 9mm , 40, and 45 all have proven track records in real life shootings so the proponents of the 10mm really get nothing from me on paper balistics. But it is a great round if you realize its short commings, basically, the poor availability and high price of high velocity ammo. Hopefully Double tap will stay in business. Because the 10mm is not much more than a 40 in an over sized package for those of us that don't reload when you consider most factory loads for it.

That said the 10mm Delta is substantially cooler than any 45 1911 dreams about being, and the G29 is a great gun considering its power to size ratio.
