What would you buy?

knives of alaska denali. Haven't purchased yet, but just a matter of time. Fondled 4 or 5 KOA blades in Sportsman's warehouse the other day. All were amazingly sharp. On ebay, they're $86 + shipping. From the factory, they're $95 + shipping.

I would also say that Knives of Alaska are some of the finest that I have handled. I did not know that they made a folder like the Denali. I own the Muskrat/cub bear combo and love them. They seem a little small for whitetail or hogs, but they actually work great. I carry a cheap Leather man folder everyday, it works fine and if I lose it or break it I'm only out 30 bucks or so.

Hands down, Al Mar SERE 2000. I did a review on my site. That is the closest you can get to a custom in a production. Most people this mine is an auto, it is just that slick.

What do you do every day that you'll use your every day carry folder for? That's what will help us advise you on what to get.

I like the Cold Steel Voyagers (Tanto blade). I have the "large" size, with the serrated blade (I work with a lot of line). I don't do anything to take care of it, it still cuts like a razor blade even though I have had it for years. It has been a solid performing utility knife for me. I carry it in my pocket all the time, it opens quickly and smoothly.

Restricted to 3 1/2" blade length where I am still...

This design just a tad smaller, with Chrome Vanadium Blade, yellow handle is fine.

I have had some Custom 3 1/2" [handle length /closed ] with O1 ,1095 or CV blades "Slim-Line" trappers both slip joint and fixed.
Yellow handles, Ivory, Mammoth Ivory, Ironwood, Rosewood...

Resembles a "whittling" or "wood working" knife. Excellent for Dressing up nice, and being a Southern Gentlemen to slice a lemon, lime for a Southern Belle's drink, cutting meat (steak, BBQ, off the pit) , Casual and IWB, Neck, Back pocket sheath, hunting and dressing game, from deer, to small game to upland birds.

Folks will cringe if you use a Ivory One to toss sparks with a mag starter...

Break down boxes, cut apples , cheese...

Sheaths were varied in styles, some more dressy, some more basic and field/farm/ranch looking.

What did I spend my "C-Note" on?

Why, a Benchmade CQC7... 10 years ago. It has served me literarly daily for 10 years and has never let me down. It has cut boxes, apples, sandwiches, etc. It has been used as a punch, screw driver, hammer, beer opener, ect. It is always in my pocket, and has never let me down. Its chisel ground blade is easy as pie to sharpen, but because it is made from ATS34 is rarely needs sharpening. ATS is not the best steel, but it has served me well, and you could do far worse. It has full titanium liners that insure that the blade will never close on your fingers. It is easily opened with either hand because it uses a thumb disc, not a thumb stud. IMHO, it is one of the greatest folding designs of all time.

The Buck 110 is an excellent choice, whether you get a standard one from Wally World with a 420HC blade for an unreal $26, an 'Alaskan Guide' S30V version from Cabela's at $65, or a Custom made for you from Buck with ATS34/BG-42 steel for $80/$84 up. Made in the USA, all blades are lockback and come scarey sharp with a 3.75" blade. There is a 'Collector's Tin' for Christmas at W-W for $30 with a mirror-polished 420HC blade with an 'Al Buck' signature, too. Great knives.

I carry a pair of Spyderco Endura's. One in my left back pocket and one in my right back pocket. One is fully serrated and the other is half and half. Paid less than $100 for both new in the box.

I like the Crkt m16 series. They have the flipper to help with one handed opening. Prob get two for a hundred. My thumb don't always find the thumb stud on other brands. I carry the EDC model daily

+1 on the griptilians. i think for that price, you can get one of the higher quality metal blades like s30V or d2.

Benchmade 710, 943, or 941 are great knives in this size and price range.
I also like the griptillians from benchmade which are a little bit cheaper.

My favorites in this category are unfortunately out of production. They are the William Harsey designed Gerber Airframe and Air Ranger II. Both have 3 7/8" clip point blades. Normally, I'm not a big fan of clip points, but the clip is quite moderate on these.

The Airframe went in the $150 range, but the Air Ranger II went for about $50-60. The Air Ranger series is quite a bit thinner than the Airframe, but the handle is checkered all over, so it's a bit rough on your clothes, though it makes for a positive grip.

Airframes are pretty tough to come by these days, but you might find Air Ranger IIs out there. With $100, I could fulfill my entire typical EDC complement of a Victorinox Rambler (like the Classic plus a bottle opener) [$15], a Victorinox Money Clip [$26] , and a Gerber Air Ranger II [$55], and feel well-equipped.

The Air Ranger series was made in Taiwan with AUS8A stainless steel blades. Excellent quality and excellent value. The Airframe was US made with a 154CM blade.

The early Airframes had machined (First Production Run) or cast titanium handles, while the later Airframes had cast aluminum handles (only 1000 made). Keep a sharp eye out on eBay--there's a healthy trade in quality knives at great prices there.

Even if you like more expensive knives, you should snap up an Air Ranger or Air Ranger II if you can find them. The build quality is really impeccable, and the pricing is phenomenal considering what you get.

I recently bought a Spyderco Endura Wave, and I love it. I'd definitely recommend one, and you'd only spend about half of your budget. :)

Spyderco Endura, Spyderco Delica, Benchmade Griptillian, Microtech Mini-SOCOM Elite (Hard to find for $100, but hell of a knife). If you could possible jump up a few bucks I would reccommend a Benchmade 710, Theirs no comparison, it will blow the rest away.

I picked up a Benchmade Griptilian today and man is that thing nice. I believe it was 87 dollars, but since it was the display model they gave me 10% off at Sportsman's Warehouse. I was not planning on buying it, but I really liked it.
