Hey all, I'm set up on my Dillon 550B to reload 45ACP. What all would I need to change on the press to go to 9mm?

Thanks.

You will need a caliber conversion kit specific for 9mm and a set of reloading dies. It makes sense to have a separate toolhead for the 9mm dies to fit in so you can just slide the 45 assembly out and slide the 9mm assembly in. You will have to change the primer drop tubes to allow for small primers. Also the primer carrier at the bottom will need to be switched to handle small primers as well. You can use the same powder measure, just adjust the powder charge weight. Afterwards, you can begin to reload just as before.

I forgot to mention changing the shellplate when changing calibers. It is included in the caliber conversion kit for the 9mm.

To go from .45 ACP to 9mm you must have the caliber conversion kit, which consists of
the shell plate, the locator buttons, and the powder funnel. You must also have the small primer conversion (primer tube, primer slide), which should have been supplied with the press. You will need the dies for 9mm, a size/decap, a seat, and a crimp die. You may seat and crimp in the same die.

Recommended accessories include a second toolhead and powder die to preserve your die settings. A toolhead stand is a nice way to store the parts you are not using at the time. You can use the same powder measure and slide, as powder quantities will be similar or you can purchase a second powder measure for quicker changes and to preserve your powder drop setting. I find it's about the same amount of hassle to change the slide as it is to readjust it for the new caliber so I saved the $.

Of course, if your budget and space allow just go for a second machine and leave each one set.

I use a Square Deal B for small primer calibers (.380, 9mm, .40 S&W, .38 spl, .357 mag) and have a 550 for the large primer stuff (.44 spl/mag, .45 ACP, .500 S&W). I haven't gotten into rifle reloading yet...
