Ok a gentleman, so I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in 223. This used to be my go to coyote gun, but I built an AR 15 for coyote and want to make this a target gun for longer ranges 400+ yards. I was using 36gr. Barnes varmint grenade. They look good on paper out to 300 yards, but past that they are unreliable and inconsistent. If you gentlemen have any experience with this gun I would appreciate any tips for a good target round.

Right now??

Any .224" bullet you can find in stock any place is the best bullet you can get.

55 - 60 grain bullets with the jacket hole in the front end have the best accuracy, and the best BC for the velocity you can get out of a .223.

Heavier match bullets will handle wind better at longer range, but drop more due to lower velocity.

36 grain .224 bullets were never in the running for any long range work to begin with.

They start out faster then a molested ape.
But they slow down & wind drift faster then a badminton shuttlecock.

I use the 36 varmint grenade because I live in California and most of the state is non lead. I tried the Barnes 50 grain but my gun did not like those.

If your rifle has the factory 1:12 twist rate, you probably won't get good accuracy with anything heavier than a 55gr projectile.

Yeah, the guy at the gun shop suggested 53gr. SMK. So now the hunt begins.

I've tried many different weights and types in my 700 and it seems to prefer Hornady 55 gr V-Max to any others I've tried.

I get good accuracy from most of the plastic tip bullets. Hornady, Nosler, and Sirra all shoot good. I buy the 50 and 55 grain when on sale. My rifle has a 1-9 twist and shoots the 69 grain SMK well too! Yours probably has a 1-12, so the 69gr may or may not shoot. Lightman

Ah, if only life were that easy; just find the chart for my rifle and cartridge, look up what shoots "best" and avoid all the costs, effort and time consuming experimention other reloaders do. But, sadly, it seems the world has conspired to keep all the magic formulas and component lists safely hidden from us!

Good luck!

I have the exact same rifle. I have had excellent accuracy with a number of bullets and powders. Since it is a 1 in 12" twist, I have not tried any bullets heavier than 55 gr, and actually believe the 50 gr Ballistic Tips, and V-Maxes are a tad more accurate than the 55 gr bullets in my rifle. It shoots the 40 gr pills very well out to 200 yards, and those are what I use for ground squirrels. I will save the 50 and 55 gr bulllets for rock chucks and coyotes. I have a box of Berger 55 gr HP varmint bullets that I have yet to try, but I am betting that they will shoot extremely well.
