Both the 16" side folding saiga and the galil sar are pretty mean. As too the meanest .308 cartidge I assume u are talking about the bullet diameter, so I would say .300 win mag or one of those RUM catridges. Tho I have heard of people necking down 50 BMG to fit a 308

ZEN, who makes the rail system on that SAR?

That thing looks like my AK and my M1A fornicated. It looks as mean as its father and as ugly as its mother! I think I like it.

I'm sure it's been done. As far as documented, there was the .338-50 Talbot. Nearly 4,000 FPS with a 250 gr. bullet. But it ate the throat out of the barrel in about 200 rounds. Just a little overbore.

"Meanest" is not precise enough to be a meaningful measure of bullet performance.

Are you asking about:
Energy figures?
Expansion?
Penetration?
Recoil?
Sectional Density?
Ballistic Coefficient?

Or what?

ok, i got a thread locked my wording things wrong so im trying to be safe...

lets say im being shipped to iraq and have to bring my own ammo (.308) which would be the best as far as "knock down/damage/dead not moving/even maybe accuracy"....hope i was more clear..sorry

That has pretty much nothing in common for ammo that you would use on a grizzly.

Of course it does depend on the weapon being used, but in general there are a couple that stand out.

The ammo to use in the case you mention is M118-ish or as close as you can get. Sierra 175gr HPBT bullet.

Federal makes a good one, part number GM308M2.

Another good choice is the Black Hills 168gr HPBT ammo. Very popular loading available from lots of places, but Black Hills is a good one.

Gonna cost big money, get out your checkbook. About $1.50 a round currently.

155gr Hornady TAP is what is recommended. I have 1000 rounds or so of it on hand and it is very accurate (almost as good as 168 sierra match kings) out to 600-800 yards with great terminal ballistics.

If I had fried eggs on Venus, would there be bones in goulash?

Seriously, what are we even talking about here? Ammo, regardless of type, will put a hurt on critters. Two legged game is thinskinned. Grizzlies are not. I sense a counterstrike induced rant coming on.

Do you own a weapon chambered in .308?
Are you going to Iraq?
Are you shooting at people? Bears?

Help us help you.

Meanest .308 is going to be a variant of the HK-51 builds. Be it a standard 8.5" (my personal choice), a K variant, or the -b belt fed of any of the above, it does offer the shortest, meanest .308 option since it doesn't have a gas piston to bend the bejesus out of on the short barrel lengths.

Your post made go back and look at an old midway order from 2004. Black Hills Match 168gr BTHP for $14.97 a box ($0.75/round). I still have an ammo can full of this stuff but the sad thing is, I dumped a full 50 cal ammo can of brass because I was young and stupid (didn't reload) :(

.300 RUM shooting a 240 Gr Woodleigh followed closely by the 15 or 20 other hyper .300 mags shooting heavy premium bullets.
