I'd like to find a S&W Model 16 in 32 S&W Long. I'd have to spend something north of $3000 to get one. So, I guess that is my "number".

Generally speaking, I plan to shoot every gun I obtain although that may be only a few rounds or none at all. I'm not into fancy, engraved handguns or special commemorative issues so the price would not be as high as it could be.

I have done some "collecting" of Model numbered S&W revolvers but being relatively new, the prices are not as high as some 70-100 year old versions.

What does my original Marcel Breuer Bauhaus chair do that a $39 Ikea chair does not do?
If I would only worry about diminishing returns, I would not have my Korths, Swiss SIGs, Colt customs 1911s, would buy my clothes and kitchenware at Walmart and my life would be a little more boring.

Amen!

Had a custom 1911 built that I've wanted for years. Spent a lot to get it done and I don't think anything other then a custom gun would peak my interest enough to spend more then that.

The most I have paid for a handgun has been $500. I found a brushed stainless Para Ordnance LDA 12-45 Compact, and had just sold a PSL for $1000, so I bought it.
Really can't say that I would spend that much on 1 gun of any kind again unless it was something extra special.

It is odd given the fact that guns will typically outlast us. Very few things we purchase now-a-days can claim the same.

I marked 2K but...
What's the most amount of money you would spend on one handgun?
I guess it would really depend on how much I wanted any one particular handgun. I lean towards older handguns such as S&W Revolvers and Colt Revolvers along with a collection of Colt Series 70 models and I like all the guns I buy to look as nice as possible which means I will not pay $800 for a beat up Colt Series 70 gun but will pay $1,500 for a minty one. I have seen guys today paying 2.5K, 3.0K and more for a clean in the box Colt Python without any reservation so I guess it's a matter of how much you want a gun and how deep your pockets are. :)

The most I have spent thus far on a single handgun was $1100, and I felt like I was ripping my liver out to pay for it. But it was worth it, in the long run.

There is a very small list of handguns that if I had the money I would be willing to spend upwards of $5000 for. It's a very short list, and unlikely to ever come to fruition. I don't know if there is a handgun extant that I would be willing to pay more than $5000 for, unless it was some crazy 1-off historical piece or something... which I wouldn't buy. I buy guns to shoot, not gather dust.
