Say I get a handgun as a gift from my parents. I am 18 and in Ohio one must be 21 or older to purchase a handgun. Say I take this handgun to a friend's farm to shoot it. However, on the way I get pulled over for speeding and the officer asks if I have any weapons in the vehicle. I would have my shotgun and two other rifles along with ammo for those in the trunk (legally allowed to own them). Of course the handgun and ammo will be there as well. But, I do have written permission from my parents to use the handgun. Would there be a problem? What's the worst that can happen?

I just used speeding as an example. Basically, I just want to know if I could get in serious trouble having a handgun in possession as an 18 yr old while on the way to the range?
 
Im 20 and I live in Indiana. Basically if its locked, unloaded, and in a case your good to go, in Indiana. On getting into trouble for possession, I'm not 100% but in Indiana, only if you were a minor would you get in trouble.
 
What does your local PD say?

Better find out from someone that knows the law for sure because having an arrest on your adult record might screw up future prospects for employment or travel.

Ohio law says that you can't buy a handgun if you are under 21 however it is legal to be furnished a handgun if you are between 18 and 21 years old for certain specific purposes only. I have no idea what "furnished" legally means or if you are required to have someone that is over 21 with you at all times that the gun is in your possession.

If you're over 18, you can legally own a handgun, you just can't purchase one.

If you were a minor, you could get in trouble, but I'm fairly certain you shouldn't have any problems.
 
this is just me. I would ask around and find OPINION. (just a hint, talk to 4 Officers from the same dept and ask them the same question and you will get at least 2 "statements of fact" (heck its almost as sure as asking on internet) :)

Once I had opinion. I would put the pistol (unloaded/cased) into my winter survival bag with ammo. Then put rifle/shotgun on top. If asked about weapons. "I have my .22,shotgun,ammo,stuff in trunk Its all unloaded"
 
I would think you would be OK. As long as the written permission from your parents stated that the handgun was furnished to you TEMPORARILY for sporting purposes, specifically target shooting. They cannot, legally, give you a gift of handgun for permanent ownership until you are 21, by Ohio law. Federal law, for what it's worth, is 18 years old for gifting a handgun. Transporting the handgun, enclosed in a case, unloaded, in the trunk of a vehicle, should be just fine.

It may not be pertinent information...but I bought a glock legally from the police chief of my college town at the age of 18. You just cannot buy from a dealer until you are 21...I believe this is federal law.
 
But I think he is talking about Ohio law, which I believe prohibits those under 21 from owning a handgun.

If that's the case, the Ohio state law would say what the worst that could happen was. It might be a felony, which means at least a year in prison, and no more guns for the rest of your life. Stay within the law.

BTW, you might just want to go shooting in Indiana or Michigan, you might be able to have a hangdun there.
 
With our Government these days, you don't want to know the worse thing that can happen.......
 
The way I understand it is you will be OK if it is locked and unloaded. You can own it, you just can't buy one.

It should go without saying, but since I am a parent, you get the lecture.

No drinking or alcohol in the car. No drugs in you or in the car. Being polite and respectful to the officer, and answer all questions truthfully. Don't drive reckless.

Most policemen and policewomen are really nice people if you are nice and respectful to them.

I would also suggest staying out of the big cities as they are more anti-gun then the country.

If stopped, you are going hunting, going target practice or going home from target practice.

Get an Ohio hunting license to carry with you, also get a gun range permit.
