What's this Remmie?

Guys - could any of you identify this gun?

It is a replica of a .44 Remmie but I haven't seen one like it before. Did a Remmie exist that was like this one or is the replica just 'made up'? A friend said it was a Remington Navy but I'm no expert - and neither is he!

That's an 1858

A standard, Remington 1858 - should be .44 caliber. There are .36 caliber "Navy" versions available from the usual makers but I don't know if they are copies of originals or a modern varient. It does have a shorter barrel - just like the Dixie "belt pistol" version:


Again, I don't know that they manufactured them that way (5 1/2" barrel) or if it was special order or an after purchase modification.

You didn't mention if it a .44 or .36, but it looks to me like a copy of Remington's New Model Army (.44) that is sometimes incorrectly called a "Model 1858."

Someone had the barrel shortened and cut away the web on the loading lever. While this could have been done by a manufacturer, the greater suspect would be a former owner. In any case I haven't seen anything like it offered here, but I have seen "owner-modified" guns along this line.

Looks like someone did the same thing to a '58 that the factory did to the 1875 to make the 1890.

The provenance could be informative.

Was this gun modified for use in an old movie, perhaps? 1890's are rare.

Did this gun belong to someone who couldn't afford a new gun, but wanted a gun that looked more like one?

Literature suggests that "being cool" was as important to certain people in the 19th Century as in the 21st.

No, that not a R&S!
Looks like some odd copy of remington or a rebuild remington.
Might be old re-blued rebuild frame whit new bought cylinder from dixi gun works

Reminds me of a .36 Remington that I looked at
in a shop in Joneborough Tennessee a few years
back.

It looks like a Remington 1858 eaither new model Army or the Navy model ...depending which caliber it is Army 44 cal ..Navy 36 cal ...no Bears on the high seas .....Never have seen a Navy with the lanyard ring on the bottom of the grip frame , Remington put those on the Police models so the beat cops could twirl them around their index fingers to impress the gals .
