So I consider myself to be a good fan of the 1911 design; and generally dislike the aesthetics of "combat tuperware."

I've always liked the idea of a solid steel firearm throwing a good-size piece of lead downrange. And, like many others bit by the 1911 bug, I have wanted another 1911 since before the sale was complete on the first. I just want an inexpensive one this time, though, for knocking around and range fun. Pretty much looking for what's comonly called a truck- or trunk-gun.

Then, for some strange reason, the other day I ended up on the Glock website. And now... I don't get it... I find myself being attracted to the G26. I mean, plastic chambered in 9mm? What's wrong with me?

The more I thought about what I wanted it for, the more I thought, for a bug-out, SHTF, cheaper to shoot, higher capacity, pretty much proven design... why not get the Glock? And it would be something different. I already know what the 1911 is about.

Then I saw the G36 and G30 models.... Now I'm really conflicted. Not only about whether or not I should give in and get a Glock, but also if I do, what caliber?

I've been thinking about getting something in 9mm in order to shoot for a little cheaper. After all, the savings in ammo will eventually offset the cost of the new firearm, right? Or do I stick with ammo commonality?

So many choices, so many difficult decisions.... Any advice from those who have been in a similar situation?

P.S. I am not trying to start yet another 1911 vs. Glock or .45 vs. 9mm flame war. For the purposes here, I pretty much see the pistols as equals.

I voted for it before I voted against it.

I do the same stuff. I see something new or interesting and think I have to have it for some reason but I usually manage to keep in control and avoid buyer's remorse. For some reason I thought I had to have a Glock 32 for carry. I thought the .357 Sig must be all it's cracked up to be and what if I need to punch through a car door! I came to my senses eventually. Maybe it's just that little bit of Mall Ninja in all of us trying to come out.

I too was mental about all steel handguns but I will admit I always try to keep and open mind. Besides the plastic frame I also had a mental thing about the trigger. Then I bought my Kahr MK9. No mechanical safeties just pull the trigger and go auto. Gee, that’s not so bad but what about the plastic?

Last week when I had the range all to myself a guy came in with a Glock 22 .40 cal. He also had a cast on the left hand and asks if I would lock it open for him. Ok, sure, no problem. We shot side-by-side chatting a bit between and I ask him if he would like to try the Karr. He in turn put 5 rounds in the Glock and said “Give it a try” “Just feel the trigger back gently until it gets stiff and after that it will go bang”. Well, it went bang all five times and I shot less than a 1” group at 21 feet. This is the first time I had ever had a Glock in my hands. It felt like and extension of my right hand. Up to that point I had never gave a Glock a second look. Not even the ones my friends own. I can honestly say as funds are available I will now add a 9mm Glock to the collection. I say 9mm because I also have other 9s and don’t want to by different ammo. I‘m not replacing any of my old friends, just getting to know some new ones. It’s amazing how quickly paradigms are broken down. No there’s nothing wrong with the thinking.

I'm speaking from the vantage point of someone new to this whole gun thing, therefore, I haven't had a lot of time to build up deep-seated preferences. My wife and I bought our first handguns just last October. In the year before that, we had picked up a .12 gauge Mossberg and a .22lr Savage rifle... but had not shot them. In the last 5 months, our collection has grown quite a bit: we've added a Mini-14, a Savage 110 30-06, and 11 pistols and revolvers. What I'm getting to is, I just got my CCW about a month ago. When I did my shooting for it, my best score was with my G26... 359 points out of 360. And I'm about as new to shooting as you can get. The gun just fits my hand real nice, and I'm totally comfortable with relying on it to do its part of the job. Five months ago I would have not only told you I wouldn't own a Glock, but I would've told you I wouldn't own anything but a revolver!

I have had a glock and I hated the way it felt in my hands and on the range (G 30)...but it was the required firearm of the company I worked for at the time. However, I never would have known how I felt about it. Maybe you are ready for a change, and the glock will feel great to you, maybe the grass is always greener...maybe you just want what you dont have...

One thing is for sure...I usually dont like the answer when I ask other people "what is wrong with me" :scrutiny:

So buy one.

I MUCH perfer a 1911. I still Own a Glock. (And alot of other guns) I want to be proficient with WHATEVER I may come upon.

The same way I prefer the M1A, but can run the AR, AK, SKS, CETME, FAL...

A buddy carries a Glcok or a 1911, he reciently bought a Beretta... he tried it and he told me the other day he's gonna sell it... no problem with trying different things.

As to what it should be chambered in... if you are going to USE it... .45ACP
If you want to just shoot it alot (As I do) 9mm.
(I have the Glock 19)

Edited to add: The Glock will make you fall back in love with the 1911's trigger. I experence this every time I put down the Glock and pick up one of my 1911's.

I've been going through something similar lately. I really prefer the 1911 platform over all others for general shooting -- and I like the heft of an all-steel gun. But lately I've been kicking around the idea of getting a S&W M&P in 9mm. The simplicity of a trigger-cocking action with no external safety, less expensive ammo, and no worries about scuffing up a polymer frame are all coming into play. Or maybe I'll wait until the .45ACP version is available for ammo commonality. Or maybe I'll have another 457 converted to DAO like my wife's -- yeah, I really do like that gun. Or maybe... you get the idea.

I'm not sure it ever ends. One thing I do know is that I won't be selling my 1911 to buy something else -- I just like it too much and it's way too reliable.

Congratulations Average,

You have achieved a zen-like state of mind that very few possess. You have braved a mental labrynth and determined that it is indeed possible, if not preferred, to possess both a 1911 and a Glock. You should truly feel blissful for your mental balance. Less than 1% of gun-owners (according to a very fictional wikipedia article) achieve this tranquil state of mind.

You are to be commended and revered as a Guru in the gun community.

 :neener: :) Cheers! :D :D :D

ETA: Oh, and for the actual "helpful" portion of my post...take a look at Smith's new M&P. I haven't shot the .40cal, but the 9mm is a sweet shooter. I love mine!

I've never understood that, personally. I shoot my 1911s and my Glocks just fine. In fact last weekend I took my Delta Elite and my G17 to the range.

Goodness. I thought I felt a distinct shift in the timespace continuum vortex. It could be because of you shooting your duo in FLA and me shooting my G22 and SA EMP in Alabama. Perhaps it was too much of a strain on the universe.

I typically don't pay much attention to those who only see value in one "type" of anything. Perhaps it is my astrological nature (Gemini), but I find great value in variety. For instance, I shot my G22, SW M&P, SA EMP and Kel-Tec P3AT all Saturday and enjoyed shooting each one equally. The only two that are remotely similar are the G22 and the M&P (albeit different calibers.)

To each his own though. I say...try lots!

p.s. Sometimes they'll even co-exist on the same surface (my EMP is to the right of the Glock and my SA GI45 is at the top of the pic).

Sounds like a good plan to me.

I've got a 1911 that I like a lot. I've also got an XD, a Smith and Wesson 39-2, a Hi-Point 9mm, a Makarov, and my wife just bought a Glock (She will not let me forget that it's HER'S).

Actually I like 'em all.

Get a M&P 9mm. They make the compact with 12 rounds instead of the G26's 10. Full size mags (17 rnds) fit right into the compact for SHTF and range fun. Easier to take down, just as if not more accurate. More comfortable.....

Or I could say "just get the one that fits your hand". That will be the M&P. I'm not kidding. I've had mine for a month (almost). I grabbed a XD the other day and was blown away at how bad the ergonomics are. Same with the G26. It was AMAZING how bad they felt now that I'm used to the M&P.

Yes you guys will keep hearing the same from me and others. :neener:

P.S. A all-steel 5" 1911 is my favorite gun of all time.

Edited to add: The Glock will make you fall back in love with the 1911's trigger. I experence this every time I put down the Glock and pick up one of my 1911's.

Edited to add: AMEN! Even my M&P with internal polishing is NO match for even a crappy 1911 trigger, not to mention my SA loaded.

So, what you're saying is, maybe I'm not so average after all?:neener:

Of course, I can always rationalize another purchase by saying if I don't like it or need the money more I can sell it.... But, deep down inside, I know I'm lying to myself. I never sell anything.:D

This is not allowed.

Non-compliance will result in immediate revocation of your Man Membership.

:p

M&P....Goooooooood.

I have 1911's for fun and the American nostalgia factor but have Glocks to carry.I have no feelings towards my beater G19 other than knowing it's been absolutely dependable-it's not pretty,it's not wonderfully made, there's really not much to even like about it other than the fact that it _works_ and I shoot it well.
I'd suggest giving the G19 a try,I wouldn't be the first person to say that it's the best of the range.

Are you mocking me?!?!?!?!?!? :scrutiny: :scrutiny: :scrutiny:

ARE YOU MOCKING ME??????? ;)

Well, at least we are doing our part to screw up the chi of the universe. :neener:

I too really liked steel guns first --- from my P7M8, BHP to my 1911's, I dig'em steel! :D Then I let poly into the collection. My collection also includes HK's & a Glock all co-existing in harmony

I've gone through lots of stages, the 1911 one was a pretty long one too. My only centerfire semi-auto now is a Glock (34) and everything else is a revolver.

I truly don't know what it means, but there comes a time when you become very clear on who you are as a shooter and give up all the crap that doesn't fit that mold. The Glock for me handles anything I'll ever need an auto for and lets me get back to who I am, a wheelgunner.

I'm not much of a Glock fan, but I do think that everyone who wants a well rounded handgun collection should own at least one just like they should own at least one 1911. Glocks are ugly, inexpensive, light weight, and totally reliable -- nothing wrong with that. I'm thinking about adding a G26 to my collection since I seem to have a growing obsession with small CCW guns.

Go with the Glock .. I need to add one to my collection .. Kind of like having jumper cable's .. You know your gonna need em and they are gonna save you a$$ one day..

The first time I saw and handled a Glock....

I did not like it at all. Then, I shot one......the rest is history.......chris3

I have several 1911's and a "few" other auto's n revolvers but even after 35 years of gun nut livin I have no glock- yet. the bug started hittin me last year.A friend requested taht I trade a berretta 92 for a match grade garand- duh- no brainer there :what: and dad wanted another gun at his house so the 5906 went there... I wanted him to have high cap and reliable- which that 5906 is... So I find myself in a sad shape as far as nines go. I need another high cap pistol to go with the reqistered sten and a kahr k9. I like havin more than one gun or two for a common round. So anyhow I am wantin a glock I think. I like the idea of a beater type and one I can use for the work truck or social events. The 33 round mags are temptin too :) I figure a 17 or a 19 will find its way to this stable sometime this year. if not sooner :what:
