What's wrong with me?

if that happens, the best second gun you can have is one that is ( as close to ) identical to the one you have aready & shoot the most/best. Shares magazines & parts & ammo~most important handling & function are the same. Learm 1 gun, know both. eg: my colt defender enjoys the company of my Kimber--even the holsters ( IWB OWB comp beltslide ). DW & PT1911 are 2 inexpensive relialibe items to look into, IMHO.

I guess one of my SHTF criteria is that should someone I know, trust and hold dear to myself come to me unarmed I can say "Here, point & shoot. Don't touch the trigger 'til you need to and you'll be fine." And until that happens, I get to have cheap(er) fun with it, try a different platform, expand my overall knowledge of firearms, etc.

Though, that could all be trumped by my admiration of JMB's design and my desire for a compact 1911. And I'm certainly not going to trade or sell what I've already got.:)

One interesting note on what to get:

I transistioned to a G34 from a G22 just prior to starting the police academy. I just ran some numbers, I've saved close to $600 bucks by shooting 9mm over .40 (been about 8.5K rounds). If I'd have gone down down from a .45 I'd saved close to $1k. This is all for commerical mid level ammo. I couldn't find good prices for the cheap stuff on line, and I don't actually know what it cost in .40 and .45 around here (since I never buy it).

If you plan on shooting the fire out of it, 9mm is probably the best "full size" caliber to go with. Personally I'd say a .22 with about 20 mags and a mag loader is another EXTREMELY fun way to put holes in things.

Well, I'm still a 1911 guy. Never liked Glocks - I don't like the safety on the trigger. I'll freely admit that opinion is coming from someone who hasn't even fired one, but there it is.

But - if that style of pistol appeals to you, & you are familiar with a 1911, why not look at the Springfield XD? The style & action is very similar to a Glock, & it has a grip safety.

I think an XD might be in my future, but I don't see a Glock there.

XD .45 a good carry gun?

Kevinch suggested that an XD might be a good idea.

I am thinking very seriously (like, gathering up cash before the weekend) of going to a .45 ACP semi-auto as my carry gun; I loved my Glock 27, but I think the G30 is going to be blocky for CCW. A friend of mine is strong on an XD with 4" barrel. Does anyone out there have / carry this model? Would you recommend it over the Glock or a 1911 clone? Any drawbacks to consider?

(I am working on bringing my wife into the 642 Club, keeping my 642 available for her use).

As always, the quality of the feedback here tops all other sites. Thanks in advance, r/
