Hi all...

Well, I’m not one for wearing or carrying anything that has some manufactures prominently affixed brand or logo stitched onto it ordinarily.

But I do need one bag for a Mossberg 930 SPX, and a hand gun to travel with or just to go to the range with.

Or I need separate ones for each that are manageable. I believe I’d prefer carrying only one bag for both guns though.

I think too, it would be nice to have a small bag for a handgun to sleep in rather than in it’s orig case… same for my HD 930 SPX.

Could I get a few links or suggestions for such containers? Something that can protect, and look halfway decent I suppose. Something that secures the weapons inside via Velcro or straps or zippered pockets.

A soft or hard exterior doesn’t really matter to me… but then perhaps you have a take on that too.

…and I’m not looking for Gucci type bags. Just simple, durable, decent looking and affordable.

Any ideas or experiences are welcome?

A 5 buck gun sock works for a utilitarian gun like a Mossberg. I store my handguns in soft pistol rugs. I can get a pile of them in a wide mouth tool bag when it comes to going to the range.

I got a Winchester range bag at wally world for $20. It's just plain black (no logos) and holds two pistols in pockets with removable pistol rugs and holds plenty of ammo. There are nicer range bags but this one is nice enough for me and the price was right.

I just use a separate soft case for my shotgun.

it's a question of what WON'T work, you can make about anything work
How to you fit his shotgun in the diaper bag, computer case, and/or day planner you suggested then?

Probably the easiest solution is find a gun bag with the features you like and then find a duffle bag slightly larger and place one inside the other.

There have been tons of threads on this topic, you might want to search around and see if any of those meet your needs.

Very cool. Thanks much.

I guess I got caught up in the “gotta have a hot looking gun bag made by a hot to go gun joint” ideology.

Never did I think about camera bags… personal confuser bags, gym bags, or just regular old luggage bags. Not at all. Sheeeesssshhhh.

I did a little searching before this post, and since online. The thing is that you simply have an awful time determining quality looking at some pic of a thing.

Figuring out how soft or hard, or water proof, secure, how deeply is it padded? If dropped into a puddle will it protect the contents? … yada yada.

So I asked for experiences too. Not just links to decent options or your own solutions, which I value too.

I’m gonna say the Diaper Bag idea is perhaps a stealthy suggestion for someone but not me. The SPX won’t fit in there for sure. My ego probably won’t allow me to tote it about in public.

But it is an idea to consider especially if it could magically turn into something loaded with a bit more testosterone when you get to the gun range parking lot...

I just don’t see me carrying a Pampers Bag around in broad daylight. Hmmmm…. Or do I?

Actually I think they’re too lightly made to be a good choice for long term use.

As far as MY 930 SPX is concerned it’s got a few accessories on it now that make it a bit more than a ‘utilitarian’ gun that a $5 gun sock is gonna reside upon it.

The PG grip and Rail mounted light alone will cause some trouble there, and the extended mag might too.

I can see two primary bags. One for each weapon type. Then one which both of those outfits can fit into. A secondary box or bag thereafter can hold ear & eye wear. Tools. Range accessories. Cleaning stuff etc.

I can’t see myself taking only one gun to the range at a time… but my above notion would be flexible so as to accommodate either way.

Thanks for the Midway and other links so far. I’m not too keen on open canvas tool bags. But the idea of a small tool box is sure a good one.

I very much like the idea of a pouch or bag specifically for the P 345 so it can lay open at night along with another mag on the night stand, and closed during the daytime.

The SPX I believe, is a bit more resistant to exposure… and while in the house, I think only oxidation remains a threat so each will receive their applications of oil or grease.

So the sack any gun goes into should be resistant to oils too. Right?

The info so far is really interesting, as is considering sacks or containers from other sporting genres, or hobbies. A bag is a bag. If a gun is in it, it’s a bag carrying a gun. Or a gun bag right then, even if it’s a back pack, book bag, lunch bag, etc.

Then it’s a matter of the confidence level in the pack and it’s suitability and strength. I especially liked the idea in another thread of using a guitar case or musical instrument case for those longer guns a lot… if the long gun is wrapped up inside some other protective er, uh, sock like thingy, and some straps are in there to keep stuff from being tossed around.

Great idea… probably the ticket for me too.

If you find those links to the pistol bags I’d sure appreciate seeing that.

Super… just what I was looking for as a night stand and about the house pouch. Thanks.

When I paid for the SPX I asked (ugh) for a container. I was at this point too, in a hurry as my ride and I were both aggravated and anxious about the whole event being way more complicated than expected. So I hurriedly bought a POS hard case with twin cut out egg crate foam loose liners. Wich encase the weapon. No straps, cords, bands or what have you inside to secure the piece, $25

If you lay it down right it is probably gonna keep the rain out. It will sit handle up, or nose up.

Rolling up t shirts or socks and placing them inside sort of secures the shotgun better,

For all intents and purposes as care will accompany this item at all times…. That’s good enough… for now.

Seeing the Wally World Pistol stiff side bag/case w/zippers & bands inside, at $12, will suffice for leaving the house temporarily. So a duffle bag, sea bag, or some other canvas bag ought to allow for both of these containers, and a small tool box and another sack for hearing and eye wear, and so forth.

Practical and useful works for me. Sharp might come later.

Maybe I can find some foam in various thickness and make a better interior within my 52 in hard case which is about 9 inches too long. Heck, I might even poke some holes in it and insert some Velcro straps… unless I can find some really strong adhesive glue to attach the Velcro to the interior of the poly, or vinyl hard case.

It’s snugg enough with the egg crate lightweight foam that I had to untwist my tac light so the pressure sw didn’t turn it on.

OK… again… I’m in the arms geniuses’ around here debt. Thanks very much for opening my eyes to other options to secure my weapons.

Well, OK then, what about a nice cleaning kit that does everything… shotgun… pistols… rifles… ???

And what oil or daily applied chemical is curretntly suggested for protecting your guns aginst oxidation, or humidity… and what grease is recommended for rails on a automatic pistol with poly frame and steel slide?

I’m hearing repeatedly the ruger likes to run slicked up best.

SPF 50? Vaseline? 3in1? Brasso? Silicone?

Tanks!

Due to the great posts here that lead me to begin thinking out of the box or diaper bag, as it were…. And a short trip to wally World. A PC bag of sorts became my first victim for safer transit. For daily nesting it slips into a zippered, lined soft side pistol bag. There’s enough room for the secondary clip too… barely.

I must say the plastic hinged box the gun came in from Sturm Ruger ain’t nothing to laugh at either. But it is a bit less manageable and it captures the eye and takes up more space than the slip cover the dealer gave me.

So I am good to go with non descript carry bags and a nice lined, zippered soft case for a day to day, pistol perch. The only consideration was the tactical attached light. Mine uses a slide, right to full on and left to off. So the KP 345 must lay on it’s left side which works fine for me.

So everything can get uh, loaded up all at once, a canvas bag or sea bag will do just fine now… along with a 45 cal barrle brush and some hearing protection like plugs and Mickey Mouse ears/muffs.

I got tired of waiting for the NEW Streamlight TLR X2 to be available and went with the 190 lumen tact light from Longhorn Tactical out of Austin TX. It’s really a very snug fit on the 345s short rail… in fact I ain’t sure I can slide it back off!?

Longhorn Tactical (http://www.longhorntactical.com/) service is outstanding, and I bought a backup tactical light that can be weapon mounted or handheld. Reputedly a tactical handheld option for a LEO flashlight. 410 Lumen. 3 position operation and a strobe. Push button end cap operation. < 6 inches long. 1 inch dia. It takes two123s or a 650. Made by Jetbeam. 30 day return. Again, great support and service. Prices are debateable maybe but with the return policy we’ll give it a go and see first hand.

Thanks to High Road it’s getting more and more interesting and that helps make renewing old relationships a bit more fun. Fun is important. It’s important to remember to add a little fun into new excursions or adventures where ever and when ever possible.
